ADT Home Security Review 2026: Both Systems Tested — Plans, Costs, Cameras & Is It Worth It?

ADT is the most recognized name in home security — over 150 years in business, 6 million+ customers, and the iconic blue octagon sign on homes across America. But in 2026, ADT is really two different companies: the traditional pro-install division with contracts and technicians, and the newer DIY “Self Setup” line built on Google Nest hardware.

This review covers both paths — equipment, monitoring plans, cameras, smart home integration, real costs, and whether ADT is still worth the premium when DIY brands like Abode, SimpliSafe, and Ring offer similar features at lower prices.

ADT Verdict Scorecard

CategoryScoreNotes
Equipment quality8/10Pro-install hardware is solid; Self Setup uses excellent Google Nest devices
Monitoring9/106 redundant call centers, fastest avg. response in industry
Smart home7/10Pro-install has Z-Wave; Self Setup locked to Google. No HomeKit
Cameras8/10Nest cameras are top-tier; pro-install cameras decent
Value5/10Most expensive major brand. 36-month contracts on pro-install
App experience6/10ADT+ app improving but still mixed reviews
Customer service5/10Contract disputes, hard cancellation widely reported
Overall6.5/10Great monitoring, but the price and contracts are hard to justify

ADT’s Two Paths: Pro Install vs Self Setup

Understanding ADT in 2026 requires knowing there are two completely separate product lines:

FeatureADT Pro InstallADT Self Setup
InstallationProfessional technicianDIY (30 min)
Contract36 months requiredNo contract
EquipmentADT-branded panels + sensorsGoogle Nest hardware
CamerasADT proprietaryGoogle Nest cameras
Smart homeZ-Wave, Zigbee, Alexa, GoogleGoogle Home only
Monthly cost$28.99–$59.99$5.99–$24.99
Upfront cost$0–$250 (subsidized)$199–$399
Early termination75% of remaining paymentsNone — cancel anytime
Target buyerHomeowners wanting hands-off setupRenters, DIY-comfortable buyers

Key insight: ADT Self Setup is essentially a rebranded Google Nest Secure successor. If you’re considering it, you’re really choosing Google’s smart home ecosystem with ADT monitoring bolted on.

For comparison, Abode’s Connect+ plan gives you pro monitoring, camera recording, and full smart home automation for $20/mo — with no contract. SimpliSafe’s equivalent is $17.99/mo.

3-Year Cost Analysis

ADT’s real cost becomes clear over time. Here’s what each path costs over 3 years:

ADT OptionEquipmentMonthly3-Year Total
Self Setup — Home$199$5.99$415
Self Setup — Plus$199$14.99$739
Self Setup — Premium$399$24.99$1,299

ADT’s cheapest pro-install plan costs more over 3 years than Abode or SimpliSafe’s best plans — and locks you into a contract.

Equipment Deep Dive

Pro Install Equipment

ComponentDetails

Equipment ownership: With pro-install, ADT often subsidizes equipment cost but you may not own it outright. Check your contract — some agreements require returning equipment on cancellation.

Self Setup Equipment (Google Nest)

ComponentDetails

Google Nest cameras (Self Setup path) are genuinely better than ADT’s own cameras — better image processing, superior AI detection, and free 3-hour event storage. But you’ll need Nest Aware ($6-$12/mo) on top of your ADT plan for extended storage.

ADT Pro Install is the only ADT option with real smart home breadth — Z-Wave and Zigbee support for lights, locks, thermostats, and garage doors. But it requires the $28.99+/mo plans. ADT Self Setup is Google-only. Neither path supports Apple HomeKit — Abode remains the only major security system with native HomeKit integration.

The ADT Contract Problem

ADT’s pro-install contracts are the brand’s biggest liability in 2026:

Contract detailWhat it means
Length36 months — one of the longest in the industry
Early termination fee75% of remaining monthly payments
Cancel in month 1~$760 penalty (on $28.99 plan)
Cancel in month 12~$522 penalty
Cancel in month 24~$261 penalty
Auto-renewalMonth-to-month after 36 months
MovingContract transfers to new address (tech visit required)

Compare this to Abode (no contract, cancel anytime), SimpliSafe (no contract), or Ring (no contract). ADT Self Setup is contract-free, but pro-install is not.

ADT Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Brand deterrence: ADT yard sign is the most recognized in the industry — studies show it deters burglars
  • Monitoring infrastructure: 6 redundant call centers, fastest average response time
  • Insurance discounts: ADT certificate widely accepted by insurers (5-20% savings)
  • Professional installation: Tech handles complex setups, hardwired options available
  • Google Nest partnership: Self Setup path uses excellent Nest hardware
  • Fire/CO monitoring: Automatic fire department dispatch on all pro plans

Cons

  • Expensive: Most expensive major brand — $28.99-$59.99/mo for pro-install
  • 36-month contracts: Industry’s longest standard contract with steep early termination fees
  • Sales practices: Door-to-door sales and aggressive upselling widely reported
  • Customer service: 2.5/5 average rating — contract/billing disputes are common
  • No HomeKit: Neither path supports Apple’s smart home platform
  • Self Setup limitations: Google-only ecosystem, no physical keypad, no Z-Wave
  • Equipment ownership unclear: Pro-install subsidized equipment may need to be returned

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ADT worth the money in 2026?

For most DIY-comfortable buyers, no. You can get equivalent or better monitoring from Abode or SimpliSafe at half the monthly cost with no contract. ADT’s value is in professional installation, brand deterrence, and insurance discounts — but those advantages have narrowed significantly.

Can I cancel ADT without paying a fee?

ADT Self Setup has no contract — cancel anytime. Pro-install contracts require 75% of remaining monthly payments as an early termination fee. After 36 months, you can cancel freely. Some states allow a 3-day right of rescission after signing.

What’s the difference between ADT Self Setup and pro install?

Completely different products. Self Setup uses Google Nest hardware, has no contract, and costs $5.99-$24.99/mo. Pro install uses ADT’s own equipment, requires a 36-month contract, and costs $28.99-$59.99/mo with a professional technician handling installation.

Does ADT work with Apple HomeKit?

No — neither ADT path supports HomeKit. If you need Apple HomeKit integration with a security system, Abode is currently the only major option that offers it natively.

Is ADT Self Setup the same as Google Nest Secure?

Similar concept but different product. Google discontinued Nest Secure in 2020. ADT Self Setup is a new system built on Nest hardware with ADT monitoring. It uses Nest sensors and cameras but runs through ADT’s app and monitoring centers.

Does the ADT yard sign actually deter burglars?

Studies suggest yes — visible security signage deters most opportunistic burglars. However, research also shows that any professional-looking security sign or camera provides similar deterrence. The ADT brand specifically hasn’t been proven more effective than other visible security indicators.

their sales and install people are very deceptive and DO NOT TELL YOU WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING FOR You do not get a formal contract or any information until after you have signed for the service and there is no information from their sales people at anytime . I would rather be robbed daily than have a company pick my pocket like a slight-of-hand thief!!!!!!!

You can do better than ADT. Its like dealing with a big Tel Co. you are paying high rates for their marketing . We have a system that is about 13 years old… and to upgrade to recent technology, they want another $500+
its 2019 and there are dozens more companies that can do it cheaper.

the review indicates decent prices? wrong.

DONT SIGN WITH ADT – RIP OFF

I’ve moved to a house in July 2018, the property is equipped with security cameras and I asked ADT if they could have their system plugged in our current cameras. Their answer “yes of course”
They did their all sales pitch to me announcing me a price of $29 per month, which I found reasonable.
The technician comes to our house and then tells us he probably can’t connect the ADT system with our camera. Make a sign a document for installation and told us to call a number to ask for another technician to come and check the cameras.
We called, and they told us they only can install their system with their own ADT cameras. FIRST LIE

One month later I am being charged $55. I called again, and they said that is the price on my contract. I asked that if it is the case, I want to cancel my account
I asked to talk to a manager and asked the manager to review the sale call. One month later and 10 phone calls later the manager told me that the salesperson didn’t do anything wrong and that it was my fault for not asking properly about the camera. SECOND LIE
But the best is to come, now I asked the manager to cancel my account and he tells me “sorry but you signed a year contract and can’t cancel unless you pay $900″ THIS IS A JOKE RIGHT?

Fast forward, A YEAR LATER, I call to cancel AGAIN, ADT first tells me they don’t do the cancellation themselves and transferred me to Defender ?!?
Defender obnoxious agent ERICA tells me ” sorry you have a 2 years contract and you can’t cancel, you need to pay 75% of your contract now to cancel it, its about $507″
I am moving out of this house, and out of the country but I still have to pay for ADT?!? I asked to talk to a manager, she says I don’t have a manager. I Asked to be sent my record of phone calls with all ADT and defender agent she said NO.

How is this legal? Why no class actions have been done? How the government allows this kind of UNETHICAL business practice? How could you force a consumer to pay for security on a place that you don’t live in anymore? And how is it LEGAL for a company not to disclose and/or LIE about the service they provide and their pricing, and have the customer responsible and liable for this?

I reported them to the attorney general and I’ll advise you to do the same

Please DON’T signed anything with ADT, they WILL RIP YOU OFF. Call other companies before making any decision.

This system is crap!! It’s stopped working after 8 months, so I called to have someone come out to fix it and they “had” to downgrade my system to get it to work. Then they send me a bill for 25.00!! I will not be continuing my service with them.

ADT has been the only home security service I’ve ever seen my family use when I was growing up and now I’ve installed it in my own home! It’s just the perfect home security because it got you covered in 150 places without stress. Their packages are great and the support is always there to clear any confusion so you don’t regret any choice. Maybe I’m just lazy and don’t care to do further research but it’s always worked for me. I don’t think they could be a scam if they have 7+ million paying customers.

We were told that we had a 90 day money back if we were not happy with the service. It’s a piece of crap! Customer service asked us over and over why it would not work. They will not listen to the customer. After one and a half months we just called to cancel. They say we have to pay for this piece of crap that does not work! I say go get your piece of ? our local dump if you want your money cuz this family ain’t paying u another dime. No correct service, No get money! Don’t get ADT, customer service is awful, cellular never works to get into your home and it takes forever to get a smart person on the phone. I say disappointed ADT customers need to ban together and fight for our right to cancel this awful services.

There are better prices out there but these guys aren’t as expensive as some local ones I’ve called too. Suppose you pay extra for brand recognition; that may be a good thing in the case of home security? Do you think criminals take notice of those signs out in front of the yard?

I had a security system with ADT. It got quite annoying having to call them every 2 months to figure out why I was paying $1, $3, $5 more every few months. They told me my rates were locked in, what they didn’t tell me was my account was being sold to another monitoring company thus raising my rates. Than I found out from another company that all the equipment I paid top dollar for was proprietary to ADT. After doing more research I learned that they bought a manufacturing alarm company called DSC.

Yeah Kurt, pretty common with ADT authorized dealers. Many use GE, Honeywell or DSC equipment. Some ADT Pulse equipment is proprietary and branded from the company but most other brands can work and then ADT headquarters monitors the alarm system.

Moved into a house that had ADT cancelled and when I tried to contact ADT for help to turn off, they refused to provide assistance. They never properly installed or removed the box/wiring. Left it all on the current owner (me) to struggle with constant tripped alarms and noise.

The reason I got ADT was so that in case I needed to move out of state for my work (a possibility at the moment) I wouldn’t have to pay a early termination fee for moving ‘out of service area’ as I’ve seen with other companies contracts. I believe I’ll have to pay a $199 or so moving fee but that’s better then cancelling and signing up with a new company once moved.

I am a single mother and the “security system” I have received is a necessity. I do not feel safe which is the entire reason I went with a home security system. I’m still waiting for that amazing ‘peace of mind’ to happen as you see advertised everywhere but I do feel better with it installed thus far. I think I will always be paranoid regardless of what I have at home but it’s a step in the right direction.

When the tech installed my service he installed the motion detector upside down. Yes, upside down. I didn’t even know I didn’t have service for the first two months because it was scanning my ceiling. I had to go online and look at diagrams to figure it out myself that it was facing the wrong direction! Then they had to send someone back out for them to install it correctly. Then 6 months later, the electric door panel they installed craps out. I call them, and they tell me I have to call the manufacturer to send the device and then call them so they can come install it. Basically, I had to reinstall it myself (took hours) or pay to have ADT install it again.

For over two years, I paid ADT monthly for my alarm system, only to find out that they were not actually receiving signals from my home (so, in fact, the alarm system did not work). In compensation, they offered me 6 months at $15/month. Need to test your system more often people and make sure the monitoring company is calling you when the alarm gets set off regardless of what company you have; this should be done!

Get the facts of cancelling upon signing up!! If not you will have headaches months or years down the road if you choose to change their service. Talk about it on the phone when you call them rather then being left in the dark on this issue.

It’s no question that ADT is one of the more popular alarm systems. I am now planning on purchasing a new home and doing my research on home security systems and ADT keeps on popping up. I’m attracted to the technology that they employ such as the Pulse app and placing an ADT sign in front of my new house will surely deter to-be robbers.

Thanks for sharing the review, do you recommend ADT as the best home security system currently on the market?

Thanks Joanna. That is up to you! They are the best for average consumer meaning: Don’t want to install your own, want peace of mind and a company you can trust. They won’t be selling your services to a different third party company like so many others. You can compare ADT to Vivint, Monitronics which are the other 2 big dogs in the professional install industry. Best of luck in choosing.

We had our Pulse system installed 8/2015 and they try to get us to upgrade now continually. Worked fine since we had it. Some initial problems with the cameras going in and out on the app, things have smoothed out over the years. Adding a wifi booster in the home can help with streaming.

We were told we could have two new fire alarm systems after 3 years. They came to install and no one came to the door. They pulled the ticket and acted like their promise never happened and proceed to tell me that my contact was extended for another year.

ADT Pulse is not a fully compatible z-wave system as they exclude many sensors that would make the system attractive for home automation. Reason for the limited functionality seems to be nefarious, i.e. trying to support their outdated business model relying on high price installer that sell overpriced. The system has potential but they need to get everything in order.

Then came faxing in papers and documents, was all a big mess. Not happy that they didn’t support my USAA membership when it really came down to it.

      Hey Steve.,

Your right that the Pulse app is a big selling point for most customers. I think what she meant by that is that when the app isn’t functioning; your security system still is and monitoring is working. That is the core and luckily during the Pulse app updates the primary function (being monitored 24/7 by ADT) is still in LIVE mode. Thanks and best of luck, we have heard it’s back to working smoothly.

They did a Pulse system upgrade on June 15, 2017 which has made for some glitches on the cameras via the app. Techs came out a few times during these issues, back on track now. In future would be nice if they didn’t roll out updates until all bugs were fixed.

I know that ADT is one of the best companies out there but I swear it has gone to their heads. I had used their service in the late 90’s before losing my first home. Years later, I come back to them after being a customer with them for 9 years and they treated me like crap. The man I spoke to on the phone kept cutting me off when I was trying to ask questions, and long story short I over paid for something I didn’t even want because the rep failed to listen to me. Could just be a rep issue??

I am extremely disappointed with my most recent encounter with an ADT technician by the name of John C. for starters I greeted him kindly and he completely ignored me as if I was speaking to someone else in the room . Upon him asking me what issues I was having with my system, he kept cutting me off stating we were using the system incorrectly, and raising his voice at me to the point he was practically yelling at me answering me in a scornful manner. For someone whose job consists of interacting with other people and in this case required going into people’s homes where they are supposed to be helping a person, his behavior was very rude and unacceptable. The equipment, security system and ADT Pulse has been great. Just had a rough start with the tech but I suppose not all of them are going to be like that, he could’ve been having a bad day.

Consumers should understand the difference between sales consultations and installations by corporate ADT vs an Authorized Dealer. Regardless of either agent consulting or installing, the security system is monitored by ADT, the #1 security monitoring provider in the US.

Heads up — if you use ADT monitoring services through your landline, if your landline is cut or goes down they are no longer able to monitor it. Use wireless / cell phone towers when you sign up!! I learned this the hardway, after a storm cut out our landline I thought I was still secure but I wasn’t and lost a lot of belongings. I suppose it’s time to upgrade from landlines anyways by now but I was still paying a cheaper monthly fee for it so I hadn’t upgraded.

I had someone enter my home when I was at work. ADT called me right away but the cops didn’t show up in time. I called back to see what ADT recorded as to how quickly they called (to see if it was their fault or police) and they said they called dispatch after neither myself or my wife answered our phones. So regardless of how quick or slow ADT may be, it still is up to your local authorities to trust their word and come check out your house. A few things got shuffled around with but nothing of real value got stolen. Not fun knowing someone has been snooping around in our home and now I am adding some Pulse cameras to the system for better surveillance.

Their Pulse app control is what I like best. I’m sure there is better equipment out there but the app ties in nicely with everything. Can add multiple accounts, see a log history of when the alarm system was turned on and off and by who. Can take a peek at the cameras during work to ease my mind that nothing is going on at home that I should be aware of. Good deal for $55 a month, a lot better than getting with a local company like I’ve seen my neighbors do just to switch to ADT a few years later.

Moving with them cost us $199 for a new relocation fee. I suppose this is better than trying to move the equipment myself or paying a contract cancellation fee. I signed a new 3 year agreement when doing this but was worth the equipment upgrade and my account stayed the same (billing wise etc).

So I have a ADT Alarm System in my house that was already here when I moved in and recently today the power randomly went out and came back on which I guess rebooted the system. I decided to step outside to see if everything was okay and when I opened my door the alarm went off and was extremely loud.. I held my hand over the speaker to kill most of the sound and decided to call ADT because I didn’t know what to do I never had this happen to me before. When I called ADT the guy told me someone can come out tomorrow to take a look at it and stop it from making noise but I had to pay $100. This is for a security system I didn’t set up, so I just had my husband unplug everything for now. Going to have the ADT rep still come out and see how much it would be for a new system to be put in. Most people probably don’t fall into this situation but hope it helps nonetheless.

Because of this careful consideration (and lack of bugs in their app) I will continue to be loyal to ADT. I have friends that go with other companies only to suffer lots of technical problems, faulty equipment and things that can only be worked out over years of testing with millions of users.

Got rid of the old crummy control panel, got a sleeker one and put it in the closet and then setup sub accounts for my kids and anyone I want to access the home security system. Never happened over the 20 years til now, the intruder most likely left before fully coming into my house. I have this alarm system to thank for keeping us safe. The ADT Pulse system was just what I was looking for. The control and app is very fluid (meaning smooth). Camera quality is much higher than any security cameras (such as Swann or Nest) that my friends have, and then you can have one company across all your home automation platforms. Best to do it this way then having to login separate apps for your home security & cameras. Installation was quick and the tech explained everything, better than a DIY option which is becoming the trend.

When relocating with ADT make sure you call them ahead of time and let them know the situation. You don’t want to end up with 2 monitoring homes or contracts in place. I forgot too and then at my new house it was a headache getting things straightened out but luckily I didn’t end up paying anything extra. So if you move, call them and see if they want you to keep some of the equipment or if they will put a new one in your new location (which is most common).

There are a few things you should do when an ADT tech gets to your house so I am passing these tips onto everyone that reads this. First make sure you get all the signs and decals you want. Putting stickers on the back doors and windows where burglars typically come through could be a life saver. Also, make sure they walk you through how to run the Pulse app on your phone. It’s really easy but I was confused on my account login information and they helped out there. Lastly, make sure to write down your verbal password (to verify false alarms) and let your whole family know. So far their security system has been what we needed!

Absolutely! People think the stickers are for advertisement. Its to help better secure you. I have a friend who kept his stickers after he moved and hasn’t gotten a security system yet but never had a sing;e issue with break ins. He lives in a bad area as well.

Security systems are not like a cell phone that you need the ‘latest new gadget’ every 2 or 3 years. If you get a quality system it can last 10+ years, just make sure you adapt to any big changes.

Right on Craig! The average user keeps their security system for 5-7 years. Many have gone up to 20 years without updating although that is not a good idea! Alarm systems didn’t change much from 2000-2010 but now with ADT Pulse and smart phone integration it is time for an upgrade for anyone with a system older than 4 years old.

I got ADT for some reasons most don’t think of. I am a business man and I know it takes years and years to build and structure a working business properly. I bought the ADT alarm because they have several monitoring stations throughout the USA all with backup features in case they get hit with a natural disaster. Their support is also levels deep in security and these are things you will not find in a review or hear about with newer companies. By them handling so many monthly customers has given them a reliable structure to handle big problems.

I have been an ADT customer for my two businesses. Because the locations were far apart I had to make it two separate systems but I still got a good discount for having them both under my name. I got all the equipment for free, and their Pulse monitoring package for under $99 a month (keep in mind that’s 2 locations). I figure that is a cheap price to pay to keep an eye on all the high expenses inside my business and I am going to do it for my home too. Cheaper then most the other home bills people pay like TV, internet and utilities and yet it actually protects the most important things, their valuables and their family members. It’s a wonder why some people are too cheap to pay for this assuming they can afford a house in the first place.

Agreed Nadia! For around $1 a day is a bargain to protect your family members and your possessions. Obviously an alarm system doesn’t give you 100% confidence that a burglary won’t take place but it minimizes the chances over 75% by having a monitored system. That is good to hear about your businesses and sounds like you will get a great deal on the 3rd set on your home. ADT also has the guarantees so if something does take place you have them and your insurance who are going to support you financially in recouping your lost costs.

I’ve been pleased with their customer support for the 2 years I have had an ADT alarm system installed into my home. What I like is from the research I have done separate of this review, ADT has not raised their monthly price in years. I guess because it effects so many people nationwide if they do, it tends to be a stable price. Much better than going with a company who runs promotions and 6 months later you are paying double for what you initially agreed upon.

2 months ago my truck was broken into my wallet swollen and my bank account drained. I will never forget the following day at work, the whole day I was worried about the thieves having my driver’s license and knowing my address. I didn’t have a security system and feared they would return and rob my home as well and with 3 children at home in couldn’t help but to be frightened and worried. As my day at work was coming to an end,all I could do was pray for some way to protect my family. I was home for 2 hrs when there was a knock at the door. It was ADT! They explained how they were in the area selling systems and could choose 2 homes for a special promotion. I like having my home and family secured now. I would recommend them to everyone and give them 5 stars.

Thanks to ADT when her ex-boyfriend came through the front door they alerted the police of the intruder alert and just almost a mins after police showed and he was found trying to kidnapp my daughter. The quick response of alerting the police is what makes me stay and will forever be a ADT customer. Forever grateful.

Wow.. Thanks for the story and sorry that event ever happened. Most of the time people who break in are known by the family and can include Ex’s, cousins or old friends. Often these people know where the valuables wanted are and best place in and out of the home as they have been there before.

If there is a lightning storm I found out ADT’s security system still works for 7-10 days if the power goes out. I didn’t find this out until it happened in my area but it made me happy I was with them! Luckily our power was out only 2 days but there was a lot of break ins throughout the city in those 2 days. I also learned when I called them during this time that if one of their monitoring stations goes out in a lightning storm that it automatically reroutes your monitoring to another station.

When I called and got ADT installed I was impressed that they stayed around to individually test each sensor for me and make sure I was good to go. I don’t think I would have been able to do this on a self installation package that other companies offer. We tested that it was connected to their monitoring station and my local authorities — a true peace of mind!

We cannot speak more highly of the customer service we received from our technician, David, and how easily the entire process of receiving the install was. From the initial phone call to having David explain how to set the alarm, everything was conducted professionally and with the utmost attention paid to having us both understand the system. I was able to get it and have a few camera’s, key remotes and things we have been missing out on for the past few years. ADT is the clear winner in my books, I hear horror stories of other companies jumping up the rate, going out of service or having 5 year agreements. I can arm and disarm the equipment remotely by cellphone. When the alarm went off one time they were very responsive. Customer service advised me how to replace the battery in the key fob. My only complaint is I was given a discount for paying for multiple years in advance and this was not offered in future years. I’ve never had one issue with the service, and the two occasions I needed help, it was due to a bad battery that I was able to replace myself. I went with ADT because they were a trusted name in the industry with businesses such as banks and other companies that need reliable monitored service. That was the most important thing to me and they have never let me down. I have been with them for over 15 years and the equipment has operated well. If I wanted to have them add additional services over the years, I know that there is an installation cost but it is well below that of a general contractor. And I am sure existing customers can self install if they know how. I have worked with customer service to do alarms tests and inquire about other things and have never had a problem. I have read many of the complaints on this site and many are a result of the home owner not doing their research or expecting free services. These companies have contracts to recoup the equipment costs. They need to pay an employee to do a truck roll for installations…every time. They are not a charity service. And I should note that in over 15 years my monthly fee has only gone up once. Not bad compared to some of the others. So again, I would rather use a company that the banking industry relies on because the most important thing to me is reliability in the event of a crisis. ADT has always been there 24/7.

At the end of the day, it’s all about the sign outside your house. The respect err. fear from thieves and burgulars the sign of ADT commands is simply astonishing. The high deterrence quotient of ADT’s very recognizable sign in itself is a very good reason for going with them. In the end, no one messes with a house with a yard sign that says, “Secured by ADT” in blues and whites and a great system to back it up. Enough said!

I have myself experienced their wonderful service on many occasions and still doing after 5 years of subscribing to an ADT plan. I’m a firm believer in a no-nonsense approach and so I prefer those companies too which follow the same policy. Without being too flashy and all, their security system gets the job done of protecting my house pretty well and that too without making much damage to my pocket. What more do I want…

That’s a very valid argument in ADT’s favor. Moving on to different states or cities is sometimes inevitable for many, which means if your security company doesn’t have a nation-wide reach, then there can be some really unnecessary hassles involved with your moving. A lot of bad blood can be avoided by going with old guys like ADT, which covers the entire nation in its length and breadth. Good points!

The military discount is a nice touch for sure. We took advantage of that as well when we signed up as my wife and I are both in the military.

Even if we didn’t get a military discount (I’m in services) I still would have gone for ADT. Almost all of my fellow comrades are using ADT in their houses and they don’t have any complaints yet. Though obviously military discount is always sweet. It goes on to show how caring and patriotic a company is towards their nation. No home security company I know of does that I think.

I really like that this company has an app that can tell you about the traffic and what-not too! I’m definitely going to check them out in more detail now. Very thorough review and very helpful. I had no idea they were so old! Interesting how they’ve adapted so well to smart phones and apps.

      Hey Hannah.,

Your right, the ADT Pulse app is different from other companies. Most others use Alarm.com (whitelabel app) for their monitoring. These guys have their own and can be used from any tablet etc.

As mentioned in another review, history is so important when it comes to a Home Security provider. I’ve only heard good things about them from my friends who use ADT. Also, even though they’re an old company the fact that they’ve kept up with technology and provide an app is impressive.

I love the pricing and information you’ve given on this company, but I’m a little worried about not getting new equipment after 3 years. I don’t want to have to fight for new things every time my contract comes up. Does making a ‘threat’ to leave the company really work? I’d hate to change companies every three years to get new equipment. I’d love to hear what other customers have done. Thanks.

Hi Tonya – alarm equipment really lasts longer than three years! It really hasn’t come too far in technology since it went from wired security systems to wireless. In the 14 years since its been little things like key remote, touch screens etc but you really don’t need to replace a alarm system every three years! (Or at least I dont). I’m sure if you call them they will work something out for you but basically is sounds like if you don’t ask for it after contract is up they aren’t going to be the ones to remind you you need new equipment. Just like any other monthly company (phones, Internet, TV) if you are paying with no questions asked they will just enjoy having a steady payment coming in. Hope that helps and best of luck at your place!

I totally agree with you, Jan. I’ve had my security system for 15+ years and I’ve had only a couple upgrades since I PURCHASED IT.

I agree with Jan. Security systems are not like a cell phone that you need the ‘latest new gadget’ every 2 or 3 years. If you get a quality system it can last 10+ years, just make sure you adapt to any big changes. There have really only been a few large leaps in alarm technology. 1) When it went from wired to wireless in later 90’s. 2) When it went from land line to cellular towers in 00’s. 3) Automation which really is a separate market and niche although closely related. Hope that helps in your decision making!

Hey Jen, the thing I have liked most about ADT is you get the most respect out of the yard sign for it. Sounds like you are in the ghetto (or bad part of town) like me and just having the sign alone gives my home the respect it needs on the block. I like the service too but the sign is the best part, also nice if you work graveyards or weird shifts like lots of us in the hood do.

Yeah, these signs definitely deter some unwanted visitors but you have to keep the sign updated. Some of my friends went the cheapskate route and rely only on the sign – this is both risky and stupid! Robbers are getting more and more gutsy so you need a reliable home security system not a sign for your front yard!

True statement about robbers Joanne! It is proven that burglars often get more in value ($$) from a home than a bank. The risk of getting caught and punishment if they do is also much lower so good to wise up and get an alarm system.

ADT is probably the best home security team around. My family used it when I was a kid and I plan on getting a system set up in my own home as soon as my wife and I make a purchase. It may not be the top home security around, but it’ll get the job done for sure.

Great all around decision. The thing I like most about alarm systems is that when I set it at night I know if anyone breaks in the Siren is going to go off which wakes me up, lets me get the gun while ADT calls the police and other emergency contacts on my list.

Smart guy Dallin! So many people think a gun is enough but we hear so many stories of home invasions happening when the gun wasn’t close enough to get or the burglar getting in at night and the residents sleeping through it until it’s too late. At least with any alarm system in place you get a good 30 second warning to get things ready in case of a face to face conflict.

Great review. I myself have always wanted to go with ADT, but I felt like I never needed home security. I’ll look more into their service, but I’m not too pleased about how they don’t give their subscribers the equipment they need. If a new device comes out, people paying for the service should know right away.

Unless you plan on spending $1500 plus starting costs for a high end security system ADT is your best bet. Among all the companies that you can get for $100 in start up costs you might as well go with them. I got a lot of equipment and have a shop on the side of my house (I work from home) and it was easy to get that set up with them too. I got a secondary control panel for my side shop but honestly I just use my phone. My kids have downloaded the app so they can turn it on (green button) and off too so they don’t have to know how to work the old panels anymore. So in total, if you’re going for the standard set up (low starting costs) alarm system then yes go with these guys over the rest.

I actually really like this company. I previously had it in my home and they are timely and the protection was amazing. I did however experience a few false alarms (Alarm going off when no one was home) but that was a minor setback that was fixed with a password. I like their pricing and it is relatively low compared to other companies.

ADT calls me within a minute of the alarm going off 99% of the time. If I’m not mistaken their Pulse is standard (at least mobile control) I would just advise anyone looking into them NOT to go with a land line system even if it saves you $10 a month. Not worth it.

Curious what was the problem with the landline installation. Was it the equipment? Sound quality?

The reason is that when I move, I was planning to have a landline installed anyway.

Also, where I am now I have very sketchy cell service, so I’m not sure I would trust a cell to talk to a security system…

      thanks for comment, Emily.

        Hi Andrea,
Land line is bad for a few reasons. If your LandLine goes out in a storm or gets cut by a burglar your alarm no longer works. Also, in 2016 majority of Landline companies will not be in existence anymore. Cellular monitoring is much safer and all it takes is a small chip inside the panel for this to work. Great questions!

Are the burglers smart enough to cut the TV cable? I use VOIP, which ADT can connect to, because I had them do that at a home I had in California. Having them use the cell chip is the smarter way. I thought because I had bad cell phone service my burglar alarm system would too but the technician taught me that they use a variety of cell tower signal strength (compared to just 1 that my phone uses) and there is never any outage. Cell monitoring is the way to go and most companies don’t even offer land line service although ADT still will if you ask them too.

It’s hard to beat the biggest and best. I started out with Guardian but worked my way over to ADT for practical reasons. Lots of companies aren’t nation wide so if you have to move (like we do my husband is in the military) it is too much of a pain to try and get out of contract etc. My advice is go with a national company so you don’t have to pay any early termination fees.

This is great advice. I was using a local company a few months ago but unexpectedly got a job several states away, and getting out of contract was a ridiculous hassle! Finally (after MANY phone calls back and forth) I got it figured out and went with ADT and have been very happy with them so far.

My family has been using ADT while I was growing up (guess you could say I was born and bread white and blue) so I ended up following in their footsteps and got it for my own home whether that was the best deal or not I don’t know. Installation process was quick, the guy really wasn’t here for too long at all. The “smart” option is a bit confusing and I wish it was explained a bit better, but in time I’ll figure it out. I can truly say they are one of the better security systems out there.

Good review overall, I didnt realize they have been around for so long! I just wish they did more in the ways of customer retintion as mentioned in this review. Basically if you never complain then they will just keep taking your money. That may be normal with most companies but now that I know i am telling my parents to get rid of their old security equipmnent and get new stuff for free.

My rating is 8.5/10. I have been with them for over 5 years and just renewed my contract to get a couple of their security cameras. They’ve always called me each time my alarm goes off which is good for me as I am both a Mother and work a full time job. I’m loving these new mobile controls and being able to see what’s going on in my home from work within the Pulse app.

If we are counting rankings then my vote is 4/5. I just got them cause I felt I knew them best. My family had ADT growing up and so I followed suite. I didn’t really compare it to other companies so can’t say I know ADT is #1 or anything but the tech that installed our system did it quick and they showed us how to work it. Their pulse app took some getting used to as I don’t really care for a “smart” home and I usually end up using the key remote they got me instead of my phone.

I give them 3.5 stars out of 5. Their equipment is the only thing lacking to me compared to what I have seen with some of my friends but I also haven’t upgraded to the new Pulse system yet so I can’t really judge apples to apples. I do feel safer with ADT and had them 2 years now. Does anyone know if they offer infrared motion detectors with camera in them? I have seen these advertised but don’t really know where to get them. Also, what are the add on costs for more equipment?

Their support calls me on time usually so I haven’t had a reason to leave them yet even though there might have better companies out there
