Arlo vs SimpliSafe 2026: Premium 4K Cameras vs Budget DIY Alarm

Last Updated: March 2026

Arlo and SimpliSafe aim at different problems. Arlo makes standalone cameras with some of the best image quality on the market — 4K resolution, color night vision, and spotlight deterrence. SimpliSafe is a full alarm system with sensors, keypads, professional monitoring, and cameras as an add-on.

The real question: do you want to watch what happens at your home, or do you want an alarm system that responds to threats? Here is how they compare.

Quick Comparison

Where Arlo Wins

  1. Camera quality is not close. Arlo Pro 5 shoots in 4K HDR with a 160-degree field of view. SimpliSafe cameras max out at 1080p. If footage quality matters for identifying faces or reading license plates, Arlo is in a different league.
  2. Color night vision and spotlights. Arlo cameras have built-in spotlights that trigger on motion, capturing full-color footage at night. SimpliSafe cameras rely on standard IR night vision (black and white).
  3. Battery-powered flexibility. Arlo wireless cameras run on rechargeable batteries and mount anywhere without wiring. SimpliSafe outdoor camera also runs on battery, but with fewer placement options and lower resolution.
  4. HomeKit support. Select Arlo cameras work with Apple HomeKit and HomeKit Secure Video. SimpliSafe has no HomeKit integration at all.
  5. Better standalone camera app. Arlo app is purpose-built for camera management with activity zones, smart detection (people, vehicles, animals, packages), and a clean timeline view.

Where SimpliSafe Wins

  1. It is an actual security system. Door/window sensors, motion detectors, glass break sensors, panic buttons, a keypad, and a base station with a 95dB siren. Arlo has none of this.
  2. Professional monitoring with dispatch. SimpliSafe monitoring center calls police, fire, and EMS when an alarm triggers. Starting at $17.99/month. Arlo sends you a notification, but nobody calls 911 for you.
  3. Environmental protection. SimpliSafe offers smoke, CO, water leak, and temperature sensors. Arlo monitors what it can see only.
  4. Lower total cost for whole-home security. A SimpliSafe system with 5 sensors, a camera, and monitoring costs less over 3 years than an Arlo setup covering the same number of zones, and you get dispatch.
  5. Cellular backup. SimpliSafe monitoring plans include cellular backup so the system works during internet outages. Arlo cameras go offline when Wi-Fi goes down.

3-Year Cost Comparison

SetupEquipmentMonthly3-Year Total
Arlo (3-camera, no sub)$450-$700$0$450-$700
Arlo (3-camera + Secure)$450-$700$12.99$918-$1,168
Arlo (3-camera + Secure Plus)$450-$700$17.99$1,098-$1,348
SimpliSafe (8-piece + cam, self)$249$0$249
SimpliSafe (8-piece + cam, Standard)$249$17.99$897
SimpliSafe (8-piece + cam, Interactive)$249$27.99$1,257

SimpliSafe entry point ($249 self-monitored) is significantly cheaper than even a basic Arlo setup. But Arlo free tier gives you camera access without a subscription, you just lose cloud recording and smart alerts.

Arlo HomeKit support gives Apple users a real advantage. For multi-platform smart home integration beyond cameras, neither system is ideal. Abode supports HomeKit, Alexa, Google, Z-Wave, and Zigbee in one hub.

Who Should Buy Which?

Buy Arlo if:

  • Video evidence and footage quality are your top priority
  • You want to monitor packages, driveways, or entry points with 4K detail
  • You are an Apple HomeKit user who wants HomeKit Secure Video
  • You already have a separate alarm system and need better cameras
  • You do not need professional monitoring with police dispatch

Buy SimpliSafe if:

  • You want a complete security system with sensors, siren, monitoring, and dispatch
  • Professional monitoring with 911 response matters to you
  • You need environmental sensors (smoke, CO, water, temperature)
  • Budget matters more than camera resolution
  • You want one system handling everything rather than piecing together cameras

Consider Abode if you want both

Abode offers a full alarm system (sensors, siren, professional monitoring) plus HomeKit, Z-Wave, and Zigbee support, meaning you can pair it with Arlo cameras or any third-party camera. Starting at $199 for the Security Kit with free self-monitoring and no contracts.

FAQ

Can I use Arlo cameras with SimpliSafe?

Not natively. They are separate systems with no direct integration. You would run the Arlo app for cameras and the SimpliSafe app for alarm. Both work with Alexa/Google, so you can create some cross-platform automations, but there is no unified experience.

Does Arlo replace a home security system?

No. Arlo is surveillance: it records and alerts. It does not have door sensors, motion detectors, a siren, or professional monitoring with police dispatch. Cameras alone do not prevent break-ins; they document them.

Is SimpliSafe camera quality improving?

SimpliSafe has been slow to upgrade camera hardware. Their current lineup is still 1080p while competitors offer 2K-4K. For SimpliSafe, cameras supplement the alarm system rather than being the main product.

Which is better for renters?

Both work well for renters with no drilling required and no contracts. Arlo magnetic mounts are especially renter-friendly. SimpliSafe adhesive sensors peel off cleanly. For a renter who wants monitoring, SimpliSafe is the better choice. For one who just wants cameras, Arlo wins.
