Start with the property jobs, not the brands
Write down the openings, rooms, panic routes, smoke or carbon-monoxide requirements, sirens, cameras, lighting, locks, intercoms, detached buildings, internet path, cellular path, backup power, monitoring, retention, export, privacy zones, users, permits, service, and exit plan. Mark which jobs need direct alarm sensing, which need video evidence, and which need both.
A door contact can report a named opening immediately without waiting for a camera to classify motion. A camera can show who approached and what happened before and after an event. Neither proves the other job. In many properties, the correct design is a sensor-led alarm plus a separately tested video system.

What a UniFi Protect design must name
A Ubiquiti design should name the Protect console, exact camera models, mounting points, fields of view, lighting, microphones, storage drives, usable capacity, retention target, switches, PoE budget, cabling, uplinks, internet path, remote access, UPS, surge protection, administrators, viewers, exports, updates, spares, and maintenance owner. Local recording reduces dependence on a cloud recording subscription, but it does not remove operating work. Monitoring and dispatch are separate decisions
A 2GIG panel may support a professional monitoring relationship, but the actual workflow depends on the dealer, communicator, service, plan, permit, verification rules, contact list, and contract. Test signals in approved test mode and record what the monitoring centre receives, how it labels the event, who it calls, and when it may request dispatch.
UniFi Protect can alert authorized users to camera events. That is not the same promise as a monitored residential alarm. If a household or guard desk will review video, name the coverage hours, alert devices, escalation order, evidence-export process, false-alert rule, and backup person. Never write “monitored” in the design unless the responsible service and event path are explicit.
Network, power, storage, and cellular failures
Draw the full dependency chain. The 2GIG side may include panel AC, backup battery, radio path, communicator, cellular service, internet, router, dealer platform, app, monitoring centre, and household phones. The Ubiquiti side may include camera power, PoE switch, cabling, network links, console, storage drive, UPS, router, internet, remote-access service, app, and household phones.
Test safe AC loss, internet loss, router restart, one switch outage, one camera outage, console restart, degraded or full storage, a missed push alert, and restoration. Record what stays local, what stops, which warning appears, where it appears, how long backup power lasts, and the restart order. A UPS protects only the devices connected to it and only for its tested runtime.
Privacy and permissions
For cameras, document lawful placement, neighbouring property, shared corridors, windows, microphones, staff or contractor notice, children’s areas, privacy zones, retention, downloads, sharing, administrator logs, and deletion. Use the narrowest view and shortest retention that still serve the stated job. A technically available microphone or wide view is not automatically appropriate.
For the alarm, separate master, installer, duress, household, guest, cleaner, contractor, monitoring, and recovery access. Use individual accounts, unique credentials, MFA where offered, and time-limited roles. Remove one test user and prove the old app, code, camera, shared link, VPN, voice, lock, and recovery route no longer works.
Ownership and provider exit
A 2GIG buyer should know what survives if monitoring ends or the dealer changes: local arming, siren, sensors, automation, cameras, app, cellular path, event history, installer access, warranty, and support. Ask whether another provider can use the exact panel and communicator and what release, code, hardware, or account change is required.
A Ubiquiti owner should keep the console owner account, MFA and recovery, device inventory, network map, camera names, storage record, exports, configuration backup, admin list, spare plan, purchase records, and update procedure. Test a second authorized administrator before the primary phone or employee leaves.

Use dated written quotes and the exact bill of materials. Do not compare one monthly alarm line against the list price of one camera, and do not treat household administration, network repair, storage replacement, or contract exit as zero.
