Choose neither as the alarm by default. Cameras can verify activity, but they do not automatically create a complete intrusion system with door contacts, glassbreak coverage, sirens, cellular backup, and professional dispatch.

Start with exact models and the same coverage map

Do not compare one Swann kit price with one Nest camera price. Mark every entrance, driveway, side passage, yard, detached structure, indoor common area, and evidence-critical zone. For each location, write the required field of view, night distance, audio policy, mounting height, cable or Wi-Fi path, power source, storage target, and retention period.

A Swann NVR quote should name the recorder, channel count, included drive, camera models, lens or field of view, cable lengths, PoE capacity, display, backup power, and spare channels. A Google Nest quote should name each camera generation, wired or battery power, mounting accessories, Wi-Fi coverage work, Google Home Premium tier, household users, and any required charging routine.

Local NVR storage versus cloud video history

Swann’s current NVR page says its systems store video on a local hard drive and lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB options across the current range. Its page also gives broad retention estimates, but real retention depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate, codec, recording schedule, motion, and overwrite settings. Run a storage calculation for the exact system. Then export a clip from the oldest day you expect to retain.

Google’s current camera page advertises six hours of included event video history. It also lists up to 60 days of event history and up to 10 days of 24/7 history with Google Home Premium, subject to camera and plan eligibility. Google’s support record distinguishes event clips from 24/7 history. Confirm the exact camera and tier rather than treating every Nest camera as eligible for every history mode.

Local does not mean indestructible. A recorder can be stolen, damaged, misconfigured, or overwritten. Cloud does not mean permanent. A service can expire, an account can be lost, or a clip can fall outside its retention window. Export important evidence promptly and keep an integrity-protected copy away from the camera system.

Power and network design

Swann says wired NVR systems can provide power to cameras over Ethernet. That simplifies each camera run, but it concentrates risk in the recorder, PoE power, switch path, and local network. Put the recorder and required network gear on measured backup power, keep it in a ventilated controlled location, and document how long the complete path runs during an outage.

Nest camera behavior depends on the exact power and network path. A battery model can keep power at the camera for a period, but cloud upload and remote review still depend on Wi-Fi, internet, account, and service state. A wired model avoids charging work but needs an outlet and backup-power decision. Test internet loss, Wi-Fi loss, breaker loss, and account sign-out as separate failures.

Video quality: test the scene, not the headline

Resolution is only one part of usable evidence. Test faces moving toward and across the camera, vehicle plates at realistic speed, backlit doors, porch lights, rain, insects, reflective walls, and the darkest part of the property. Check whether compression, motion blur, glare, or night switching hides the detail you need.

Export one Swann clip and one Nest clip from the same scene. Compare timestamps, duration, sound, lead-in, recovery after motion, file format, and whether another person can open the exported file without the vendor app.

Detection and alerts

Google’s current Nest camera page highlights person, vehicle, animal, and activity-zone alerts, while some newer features depend on Google Home Premium and current model eligibility. Swann detection varies by recorder and camera. Never apply one model’s detection list to the whole brand.
