The Monitoring Center (TMC) is a wholesale central station that provides 24/7 alarm monitoring infrastructure for security dealers, integrators, and alarm companies across North America. If you’ve never heard of them, that’s by design — TMC doesn’t sell to homeowners. They’re the engine room that powers smaller security companies.
This review explains what TMC does, how wholesale monitoring works, and — most importantly — what it means for you as a homeowner if your alarm company uses TMC.

How Wholesale Monitoring Works
Most people don’t realize that many security companies don’t actually monitor alarms themselves. Here’s the chain:
| Step | Who | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Alarm triggers | Your security panel | Sensor detects intrusion, fire, or CO — panel sends signal |
| 2. Signal received | TMC central station | Operators receive alarm signal via cellular, IP, or phone line |
| 3. Verification | TMC operator | Attempts to contact homeowner, checks passcode |
| 4. Dispatch | TMC operator | Contacts police, fire, or EMS if alarm is verified |
| 5. Notification | Your alarm dealer | Gets alerted about the event for follow-up |
Your alarm company (the dealer) handles sales, installation, and customer service. TMC handles the actual 24/7 monitoring. You pay your dealer; your dealer pays TMC a wholesale rate.
The Markup Problem
This is where it gets interesting for consumers. TMC charges dealers roughly $1-5 per account per month. Your dealer then charges you $25-55+ per month. That’s a 5-50x markup. The dealer pockets the difference as profit.
| What you pay | What dealer pays TMC | Dealer profit | Dealer’s margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| $25/mo (basic) | ~$2-3/mo | ~$22-23/mo | 88-92% |
| $35/mo (standard) | ~$3-4/mo | ~$31-32/mo | 89-91% |
| $50/mo (premium) | ~$4-5/mo | ~$45-46/mo | 90-92% |
This isn’t unique to TMC — it’s the standard dealer model. Companies like COPS Monitoring and All American Monitoring operate the same way. The monitoring quality is identical regardless of which dealer sells it to you.
TMC’s Certifications & Quality
TMC holds the industry’s top certifications:
| Certification | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| UL Listed | Underwriters Laboratories certified | Required for insurance discounts and commercial accounts |
| FM Approved | Factory Mutual certification | Gold standard for fire monitoring — required by many commercial insurers |
| CSAA Five Diamond | Central Station Alarm Association top tier | Highest operator training and response time standards |
The Five Diamond certification is particularly important — it means TMC operators are trained and tested to higher standards than basic monitoring centers. Only about 3% of monitoring centers hold this designation. Response times, operator protocols, and false alarm handling all meet stricter criteria.
TMC vs Other Wholesale Monitoring Centers
| Center | UL Listed | Five Diamond | FM Approved | Est. | Notable clients |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TMC | Yes | Yes | Yes | 1975 | Regional dealers, integrators |
| COPS Monitoring | Yes | Yes | Yes | 1978 | SimpliSafe, thousands of dealers |
| All American Monitoring | Yes | Yes | No | 2002 | Mid-size dealers |
| Rapid Response | Yes | Yes | No | 1992 | Regional dealers |
| AvantGuard (ADT wholesale) | Yes | Yes | Yes | 2002 | ADT authorized dealers |
All top-tier wholesale centers provide essentially the same quality of monitoring. The difference is in dealer pricing, technology support (Alarm.com vs proprietary), and geographic coverage.
What This Means for Homeowners
If your alarm company uses TMC
Good news: you’re getting quality monitoring from a Five Diamond certified center. The monitoring itself is solid. But you should ask yourself:
- What are you paying per month? If it’s $35-55/mo, you’re paying a significant dealer markup
- Are you in a contract? Most TMC dealers lock you into 36-60 month agreements
- Do you own your equipment? Many dealers retain ownership — you can’t take it if you switch
- What’s the early termination fee? Often 75-100% of remaining contract value
The DIY alternative
Modern DIY security systems provide the same (or better) monitoring quality without the dealer markup or contracts:
| Feature | TMC via dealer | Abode | Ring | SimpliSafe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | $35-55/mo | $6-20/mo | $20/mo | $20-28/mo |
| Contract | 36-60 months | None | None | None |
| Equipment ownership | Often leased | You own it | You own it | You own it |
| Installation | Professional (included) | DIY (15 min) | DIY (15 min) | DIY (15 min) |
| Monitoring quality | Five Diamond (TMC) | Five Diamond | Five Diamond | Five Diamond (COPS) |
| Smartphone app | Varies (often Alarm.com) | Yes (excellent) | Yes (good) | Yes (good) |
| Cameras | Extra cost | Included plans | Ring Protect | Included plans |
| Smart home | Limited | HomeKit/Alexa/Google | Alexa only | Limited |
| 3-year total cost | $1,260-1,980+ | $199-919 | $920-1,080 | $600-1,208 |
3-Year Cost Comparison
| System | Equipment | Monthly | 3-Year Total | Contract |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TMC dealer (typical) | $0-199 (often “free”) | $35-55 | $1,260-1,980 | 36-60 months |
| Abode (Connect+) | $199 | $12 | $631 | None |
| Abode (Pro) | $199 | $20 | $919 | None |
| Ring (Pro) | $200 | $20 | $920 | None |
| SimpliSafe (Interactive) | $200-300 | $28 | $1,208-1,308 | None |
The “free equipment” from dealers isn’t free — it’s baked into your monthly payments over a multi-year contract. With Abode, you pay $199 upfront for equipment you own forever, then $6-20/month with no contract. Over 3 years, you save $341-1,349 compared to a typical TMC dealer.
Can You Use TMC Directly?
No. TMC is strictly B2B — they don’t sell monitoring services to individual homeowners. You’d need to go through one of their authorized dealers.
If you’re a security dealer or integrator looking for wholesale monitoring, TMC is a solid option with competitive per-account pricing and top certifications. Contact them directly for dealer pricing.
If you’re a homeowner, skip the dealer middleman entirely and go with a DIY security system that includes professional monitoring at a fraction of the dealer cost.
Should You Switch Away from a TMC Dealer?
| Stay with your TMC dealer if… | Switch to DIY if… |
|---|---|
| You’re happy with the service quality | You’re paying $35+/month |
| Your contract is almost up | You’re locked into a long contract |
| You need commercial-grade monitoring | You want smart home integration |
| You prefer professional installation | You want cameras included |
| You have complex commercial needs | You want no-contract flexibility |
If you’re currently with a TMC dealer and paying $35+/month on a contract, check your contract cancellation options. Sometimes paying an early termination fee still saves money in the long run when you switch to a $6-20/month DIY system.
Monitoring Industry in 2026: Key Changes
The professional monitoring landscape continues to evolve:
- Video verification is now standard at top centers — TMC and other Five Diamond stations now offer video-verified alarm dispatch as a standard capability for dealers who support it. When a sensor triggers, operators can view camera footage before calling police — reducing false alarms by up to 90% and cutting dispatch times by 50%. Systems like SimpliSafe (Active Guard) and Abode use this capability.
- Landline monitoring nearly extinct — Less than 5% of new alarm installs use landline connections. Cellular (LTE/5G) is now the default signal path, with dual-path (cellular + Wi-Fi) becoming premium. If your system still relies on a phone line, it’s time to upgrade — landlines are being decommissioned nationwide.
- Self-monitoring continues to gain share — Industry data suggests over 40% of new DIY system buyers choose self-monitoring over professional dispatch. Abode’s free tier leads this trend with full app control and push notifications at $0/month, while still offering professional monitoring for those who want it.
- AI-assisted dispatch emerging — Several monitoring centers are testing AI that pre-screens alarm events using sensor patterns and camera feeds before routing to human operators. This promises faster response for real emergencies while filtering out obvious false alarms (pets, HVAC, wind).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my alarm company uses TMC?
Ask your alarm company directly: “Who operates your monitoring central station?” They may use TMC, COPS, or another wholesale center. Some operate their own stations (like ADT, Vivint, and Guardian). Your alarm permit paperwork may also list the monitoring center.
Does it matter which wholesale center my dealer uses?
For Five Diamond certified centers like TMC, COPS, and All American — not really. They all meet the same high standards for operator training, response times, and equipment. The quality differences are minimal between top-tier wholesale centers.
Is TMC monitoring as good as ADT or Vivint?
Yes — arguably better in some cases. TMC holds the same Five Diamond certification that ADT’s centers hold. The monitoring quality is equivalent. The difference is in what you pay: ADT charges $28-60/month; a TMC dealer typically charges $35-55/month; and DIY systems like Abode provide equivalent Five Diamond monitoring for $6-20/month.
Can I get cheaper monitoring for my existing panel?
Yes. If you own your alarm panel (Honeywell, DSC, 2GIG, etc.), services like Alarm Grid or Alarm Relay can provide monitoring for $10-20/month without contracts. They use the same wholesale centers. However, if your dealer owns the equipment, you may need to return it when you cancel.
What happens to my monitoring if TMC has an outage?
TMC operates redundant monitoring centers — if one goes down, another takes over automatically. This is standard for UL-listed stations. Your alarm signals are routed to backup centers within seconds. No Five Diamond center operates from a single location.
Is wholesale monitoring less reliable than branded monitoring?
No. ADT, Vivint, SimpliSafe, and Abode all use the same fundamental monitoring infrastructure. SimpliSafe uses COPS Monitoring (wholesale); Abode and many others use Five Diamond certified centers. The “brand” on the monitoring doesn’t affect quality — the certifications do.

Growing up with Law and Order and CSI shows taught Isabelle Landau one thing: if people back then had high-quality home security systems, those series would have been way shorter. In our modern world, technology helps us keep burglars away easily, and this is what Izzy studies and writes about: alarm systems, home security, protection systems, and more.

We were also hit with hidden fees that TMC does not disclose on their website. $9.99 per month is only for landline, but they do not honor this price for VOIP, which many customers have. Instead they tried to upcharge to $14.99 or more. Also, TMC has earlier renewed our contract on an annual basis, with periodic unauthorized price increases. This despite the fact that the equipment they provide is light years behind what you could get on Amazon for half the price. When we had an issue with TMC billing we got the runaround. They told us they needed to talk to a manager, then disconnected the phone without getting back to us. After we cancelled, they finally called and told us they would not refund the balance on the unauthorized contract renewal. Pretty shoddy service all the way around.

I switched to TMC from another company. The monitoring cost difference was the first biggest influence. I had the equipment and it was compatible to switch over. As for the monitoring, I are very impressed and pleased with the service (better than the bigger company); they call immediately when the alarm is set off (accidentally), whereas we had 3 alarm incidents with the other company with no call back… I wasn’t impressed.
I will stay with TMC as long as things don’t change and even tell my friends of them.

We purchased a home with and existing alarm system, we wanted security. Looking around all other guys charged 35+/ mo. I found the monitoring center and was able to reuse the whole system (saving new system fee) and only pay 20/mo. With cell back up. The local alarm guy came to the house to sale his product and was bashing my ” other guys systems” saying they don’t call in an emergency …blah ..blah. blah..I close my door set my alarm. Triggered a alarm and in 5 sec, who is calling my Monitoring center… Local alarm company has not bee. To my house after that. He was trying to charge 50/mo. For the same thing… monitoring center has no hidden fees. # 2+ year customer..

Thank you for this review. I was debating on a few places here for security and protection and The Monitoring Center sounded like my best option. I gave them a call last week and they will be coming here tomorrow to set me up. They were very nice and kind. I feel like I mad the right choice and it was thanks to your helpful review.

Welcome on Board Chelsea!!! We are happy to service your security needs :).

Wow I had no idea what I was in for with the Monitoring Center. Hidden fees and “other” fees are heavier than flies on horse poo with this company! It is a shame because I did like a few of the things they offered but after dealing with hidden fees with a cellphone carrier for 5 years and a cable company for 7, I am good on that! I will look elsewhere.
Melvin Baker says
Are you sure it was not explained at all? The hidden fees have to do with the communications and software updates. I was told some months it can be as much as $30 over what I will be stated to pay. I don’t know, maybe some of the reps are dishonest?
Mirella says
Hi Melvin. Perhaps there was a misscommication as TMC’s pricing for monitoring is very straight forward. $9.99/month for land line monitoirng…$5.00 additional for internet monitoring or $8.00 additional for GSM monitoring. Please do contact me directly to review this pricing, Mirella, TMC Sales Manager 1-866-247-4999 X 2235 or email me at mirella@ themonitoringcenter com

I wanted to like The Monitoring Center but my budget is just too tight to work around hidden fees. I feel like the hidden charges need to be made more clear. Luckily I was able to back out at the last minute. Very nice people and good customer care but the hidden charges are not worth it.
Mirella says
Hi Adam…I’m sorry we were unable to gain your business. There are no hidden charges as we do discuss all with you prior to installation. There are also interest free payback options which make the up-front costs more palatable for you. Should you reconsider please contact me directly. Mirella, TMC Sales Manager 1-866-247-4999 or email me at mirella@themonitoringcenter.com. Thank you for your consideration.
Carol Keesh says
Saying there is a lot of additional fees is an understatement! I got a quote from them and I kept asking “So this is the final price then” and they kept adding more. The security is great but for a single parent on a budget it is just not doable. Thanks for this honest review. I feel I made the best decision. I will check out other reviews on your site and find one that is more affordable.
Mirella says
We have options to split your payments with no interest in order to assist you Carol. You have full ownership of your equipment and the equipment is not proprietary so there are many advantages not covered in this review post.
Mirella says
Hi Carol…there are no hidden charges and not like our competitors you have full ownership of your equipment and the system is not proprietary which means with the system we install you can be monitored by any other provider. We are more than happy to work with you to spread out the payments of the up-front costs. Please do contact me directly, Mirella, TMC Sales Manager 1-866-247-4999 X2235 or email mirella@themonitoringcenter com. Thank you.
