myQ Outdoor Battery Camera Review 2026: Chamberlain’s $130 Garage Cam — Strong Battery Life, But Limited Smart-Home Ecosystem

Chamberlain myQ Outdoor Battery Camera: A Garage Brand’s Security Play

Chamberlain — the company behind the myQ Smart Garage Controller — launched outdoor battery cameras in late 2024, trying to expand beyond garage doors into full home security. The myQ Outdoor Battery Camera ($129.99) is their first standalone security camera.

But here’s the question: should you buy a security camera from a garage door company? We’ve tested dozens of cameras, and the answer is nuanced.

myQ Outdoor Battery Camera: Quick Specs

myQ Camera vs the Competition

The myQ camera enters a brutally competitive market. Here’s how it stacks up against established players:

The verdict is clear: the myQ camera is overpriced for what you get. At $130 for a 1080p camera with no local storage and paid person detection, it’s behind cheaper options like the Abode Cam 2 ($35) and Wyze Cam v4 ($36) that offer equal or better specs.

The Garage Door Camera Use Case

The one scenario where the myQ camera makes sense: you already own a myQ Smart Garage Controller and want a matching camera for your garage in a single app.

But even then, you should consider whether a camera alone is enough. Cameras record crimes — they don’t prevent them. For actual protection, you need a security system with sensors, alerts, and monitoring.

Cameras vs Security Systems: An Important Distinction

CapabilityCamera Only (myQ)Security System (Abode)
Records video✅✅ (with cameras)
Detects door/window opening❌✅ (sensors)
Sounds loud siren❌✅ (105dB)
Alerts monitoring center❌✅ (optional)
Auto-arms when you leave❌✅ (geofencing)
Detects glass breaking❌✅ (glass break sensors)
Controls smart locks❌✅ (Z-Wave/Zigbee)

A single myQ camera watching your driveway gives you evidence after the fact. A system like Abode ($199 for the full kit) gives you sensors on every entry point, a 105dB siren, smartphone alerts, and optional professional monitoring — plus you can add cameras for $35 each.

Our Verdict: 2/5 — Skip It

The myQ Outdoor Battery Camera is a mediocre camera at a premium price from a company with no security track record. At $130 for 1080p with no local storage and paid AI features, it’s objectively worse than cameras costing a third the price.

If you need a garage-specific camera, the myQ makes marginal sense if you’re already in the myQ ecosystem. For everyone else, get an Abode Cam 2 ($35) for the camera and an Abode Smart Security Kit ($199) for actual security.

If you specifically want battery-powered outdoor cameras, the Blink Outdoor 4 ($100) offers better battery life, free person detection, and optional local storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the myQ Outdoor Battery Camera worth buying?

For most people, no. At $130 for a 1080p camera with no local storage, it’s overpriced compared to the Abode Cam 2 ($35) or Wyze Cam v4 ($36). The only reason to buy it is if you already have a myQ Smart Garage Controller and want everything in one app.

Does the myQ camera work with home security systems?

No. The myQ camera is a standalone device — it doesn’t integrate with security systems like Abode, Ring Alarm, or SimpliSafe. It can’t trigger alarms, work with door sensors, or coordinate with a monitoring center. For actual security, you need a proper system.

How long does the myQ camera battery last?

Chamberlain claims 3–6 months depending on activity level. In comparison, the Blink Outdoor 4 can last up to 2 years on AA batteries, and the Ring Stick Up Cam lasts 6–12 months.

Can the myQ camera record without a subscription?

You can view a live feed without a subscription, but recording clips and person detection require a myQ Video Storage plan ($2.99–$9.99/month). Without it, you’re essentially watching live only — no playback of missed events.

What’s better: a myQ camera or a Ring camera?

Ring is better in almost every way. Ring cameras are part of a full security ecosystem (Ring Alarm), offer optional local storage (Ring Protect Pro), and have a massive compatible device lineup. The only myQ advantage is garage door integration. For a full comparison: Ring Alarm Review →

Should I get a camera or a full security system?

A full security system. Cameras alone record crimes — they don’t prevent them. A system like Abode ($199) includes door/window sensors, a siren, motion detection, and optional monitoring. Add cameras ($35 each) for video evidence on top of actual protection. Read: Abode Review →
