Why Houston Homes Need Better Security Than Average
Houston is the 4th largest city in America (2.3 million residents, 7 million metro) — and its security challenges are uniquely complex. Property crime rates run 40-60% above the national average, hurricane season creates looting risk during evacuations, and the city’s massive sprawl (670+ square miles) means police response times vary wildly by neighborhood.
Add Houston’s extreme heat (which kills battery-powered devices), flooding risk (Hurricane Harvey displaced 30,000+ people), and rapid suburban growth — and choosing the right security system here requires Houston-specific thinking.
| Houston Security Factor | Impact | What to Look For |
|---|---|---|
| Property crime rate | ~5,200 per 100K (vs 2,100 national) | Monitored system with fast police dispatch |
| Hurricane season (Jun-Nov) | Power outages, evacuations, looting | Cellular backup, battery-powered cameras, remote access |
| Flooding risk | Water damage to ground-floor equipment | Water leak sensors, elevated panel placement |
| Extreme heat (100°F+) | Battery drain, camera overheating | Hardwired or solar cameras with heat ratings |
| City size (670 sq mi) | Variable police response (8-45 min) | Video verification for faster dispatch |
| Vehicle theft (#3 in US) | Garage/driveway vulnerability | Garage sensors, driveway cameras |
| Package theft | High density + porch pirate rings | Video doorbell with package alerts |
Best Home Security Systems for Houston (2026 Rankings)
#1: Abode — Best Overall for Houston
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Starting Price | $199 (Smart Security Kit) |
| Monthly | $0 (self-monitor) to $20 (pro + cellular) |
| Contract | None |
| Houston Advantage | Geofencing auto-arms when you evacuate; CUE automations for hurricane prep |
| Smart Home | HomeKit, Z-Wave, Zigbee — best protocol support of any DIY system |
| Water Sensors | $30 each — critical for Houston flood monitoring |
Why #1 for Houston: Abode’s geofencing automatically arms your system when you leave — invaluable during hurricane evacuations when you’re focused on your family, not your alarm panel. The CUE automation engine lets you create a “hurricane mode” that arms the system, locks all doors, turns on cameras, and activates water leak sensors with one tap. Add water leak sensors ($30 each) in flood-prone areas of your home — they’ll alert your phone even when you’re across the state in an evacuation shelter.
#2: Ring — Best Camera Coverage for Large Properties
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Starting Price | $199 (Alarm kit) |
| Monthly | $0 (self) to $20 (Protect Pro) |
| Contract | None |
| Houston Advantage | Ring Neighbors app has massive Houston user base; solar cameras for heat |
| Camera Ecosystem | Largest camera selection (indoor, outdoor, floodlight, doorbell, solar) |
Why #2: Houston’s sprawling lots (especially in suburbs like Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands) need camera coverage across large areas. Ring’s solar-powered cameras handle Houston’s abundant sunshine without battery drain from the heat. The Ring Neighbors app has one of its densest user bases in Houston — real-time crime alerts from your actual neighbors.
#3: SimpliSafe — Best for Houston Renters
| Feature | Detail |

| Starting Price | $199 (Foundation kit) |
| Monthly | $0 (self) to $28 (Fast Protect) |
| Contract | None |
| Houston Advantage | Easy move between apartments; Live Guard video verification |
| Unique Feature | Live Guard — agent watches camera feed during alarm for verified dispatch |
Why #3: Houston has a 55%+ renter population, and SimpliSafe’s peel-and-stick sensors move easily between apartments. Live Guard video verification can get faster police response — important in a city where standard response times can stretch to 30+ minutes in busy periods.
#4: ADT — Best for Professional Installation
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Starting Price | $99 (Self Setup) / $0 down (Pro Install) |
| Monthly | $6 (Self Setup) to $60 (Pro Install) |
| Contract | 0 months (Self Setup) / 36 months (Pro Install) |
| Houston Advantage | Local monitoring center in Irving, TX; established installer network in Houston |
Why #4: ADT has deep roots in Texas with a monitoring center in Irving (just 3.5 hours from Houston). If you want someone to professionally install everything and don’t mind a 36-month contract, ADT’s Pro Install path includes Google Nest cameras. But the Self Setup path ($6/mo, no contract) is a much better deal — read our full ADT review.
#5: Vivint — Best Premium Smart Home
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Starting Price | $0 down (equipment financed) |
| Monthly | $30–$50+ |
| Contract | Equipment financing (60 months typical) |
| Houston Advantage | Professional installation handles complex setups; 4K cameras with Smart Deter |
Why #5: Vivint’s 4K cameras with AI-powered Smart Deter (the camera talks to intruders) are impressive for large Houston properties. But you’ll pay 3-4x more than DIY options over 3 years. Only consider if you want premium hardware and don’t mind the cost. Read our Vivint review.

Houston-Specific Security Tips
1. Hurricane Season Preparation (June–November)
Houston gets hit by major storms regularly. Your security system needs to survive:
| Hurricane Threat | Security Solution | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Power outages (days to weeks) | Cellular backup on your alarm + battery cameras | Included with monitoring plan |
| Flooding (ground floor) | Water leak sensors in garage, laundry, near water heater | $25–$35 each |
| Evacuation looting | Geofencing auto-arms when you leave + pro monitoring | $6–$20/mo |
| Wind damage to cameras | Hardwired or securely mounted outdoor cameras (rated IP66+) | $35–$200 |
| Internet outage | Cellular-only backup communication — NOT Wi-Fi dependent | Included with pro monitoring |
Pro tip: Create a “hurricane mode” automation in Abode’s CUE engine: one button arms the system, locks all smart locks, starts recording on all cameras, and activates water sensors at heightened sensitivity. Test this before hurricane season — not during.
2. Vehicle Theft Prevention
Houston consistently ranks top 3 in the US for vehicle theft. Catalytic converter theft is also rampant (Houston is #1 nationally). Protect your driveway and garage:
- Driveway camera with person/vehicle detection — alerts before someone reaches your car
- Smart garage controller — know if your garage is open, close it remotely
- Motion-activated floodlight — Ring Floodlight Cam combines camera + light + siren
- Garage door sensor — Abode and Ring both offer tilt sensors that alert if the garage opens unexpectedly
3. Package Theft Protection
Houston’s sprawling neighborhoods and porch pirate rings make package theft a daily concern:
- Video doorbell — package delivery alerts + two-way audio to talk to delivery drivers
- Amazon Key / Ring integration — in-garage delivery keeps packages hidden
- Package lockbox on the porch for smaller deliveries
4. Extreme Heat Considerations
Houston regularly exceeds 100°F with brutal humidity. This affects security equipment:
- Battery cameras drain 2-3x faster in extreme heat — choose solar-powered or hardwired
- Outdoor keypads can malfunction in direct sun — install under shade or use a smart lock with phone-based entry instead
- Adhesive sensors may lose grip in humid Houston garages — use screw-mounted options in non-climate-controlled areas
5. Neighborhood-Specific Advice
| Houston Area | Crime Profile | Recommended Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Inner Loop (Montrose, Heights, Midtown) | Package theft, car break-ins, walkable density | Video doorbell + indoor cameras + smart locks |
| Southwest Houston (Sharpstown, Alief, Gulfton) | Higher burglary rates, apartment-heavy | Full alarm system + glass break + renter-friendly setup |
| Greenspoint (“Gunspoint”) | Highest crime area in Houston | Pro-monitored system + outdoor cameras + motion lights |
| Suburbs (Katy, Sugar Land, Woodlands) | Property crime from highway access, vehicle theft | Perimeter cameras + driveway alerts + garage sensor |
| Energy Corridor / Memorial | Targeted burglaries of affluent homes | Comprehensive system + glass break + strategic camera placement |
| Clear Lake / NASA area | Moderate crime, hurricane flooding zone | Flood sensors + battery backup cameras + cellular monitoring |
6. Insurance Discounts in Texas
Texas homeowners insurance is among the most expensive in the nation (average $3,500+/year). A monitored security system can save you 5-20% annually — that’s $175-$700/year, which easily pays for the system itself.
Requirements vary by insurer, but most require:
- UL-listed monitoring center (Abode, Ring, SimpliSafe, ADT all qualify)
- Active professional monitoring plan (not self-monitoring)
- Certificate of monitoring from your provider
At $20/mo for Abode Pro monitoring, you’d spend $240/year on monitoring but save $175-$700 on insurance — it literally pays for itself in Texas.
Recommended Houston Security Setup by Budget

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best home security system for Houston?
Abode is our top pick for Houston because of its geofencing (auto-arms during evacuation), water leak sensors ($30), CUE hurricane prep automations, HomeKit support, and no-contract pricing. For camera-heavy setups on large suburban lots, Ring is a close second.
Do I need flood sensors in Houston?
Absolutely. Houston is the most flood-prone major city in the US. Even homes outside FEMA flood zones flood during major storms — Harvey proved that when 70% of flooded homes were outside designated flood zones. Place water leak sensors near your water heater, washing machine, under kitchen sink, and in the garage.
Will my security system work during a hurricane?
Only if it has cellular backup — Wi-Fi and internet will go down during major storms. All five systems we recommend include cellular communication with their monitoring plans. Battery backup keeps the panel running for 24+ hours without power. For cameras, battery-powered or solar models continue recording during outages.
How much can I save on homeowners insurance with a security system in Texas?
5-20% off your annual premium, which in Texas (average $3,500+/year) means $175-$700 in savings. You’ll need active professional monitoring — self-monitoring doesn’t qualify. Abode Pro at $20/mo ($240/year) easily pays for itself through insurance savings alone.
Is ADT popular in Houston?
Yes — ADT has a large installer network in Houston and a monitoring center in Irving, TX. However, their Pro Install path requires a 36-month contract and costs $1,000-$2,000+ over 3 years. Their newer Self Setup option ($6/mo, no contract) with Google Nest cameras is a much better value. Read our ADT review.
What about local Houston security companies?
Houston has several local providers (Alarm One, Smith Thompson, Alert Protection Services), but most use Alarm.com’s platform through dealer markup — meaning you pay a middleman premium for the same technology. DIY systems from Abode, Ring, or SimpliSafe give you equal or better technology at 40-60% lower cost with no contracts. The exception: if you need commercial-grade security for a business, local dealers may offer better on-site service.

Growing up with Law and Order and CSI shows taught Isabelle Landau one thing: if people back then had high-quality home security systems, those series would have been way shorter. In our modern world, technology helps us keep burglars away easily, and this is what Izzy studies and writes about: alarm systems, home security, protection systems, and more.

Maria Reeder says
I believe the looting only occurred at retail stores? I don’t think this would warrant a home-owner to seek security system to protect themselves or am I missing something?
I would get a security system though just because it is something that can save your life. I really like your website, what would you say is your hands down favorite secruity system?
Tucker says
Not a local of Houston, TX but my mother is living there. I believe she has a security system installed through The Security Store and she said she feels safe. I am glad you included them on this list, thanks so much for sharing and helping others stay protected in this day and age.
All the best.

Jenney Hayes says
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who felt that OnDuty needed to get with the times (website wise)! However, I’m a fan of security systems that are true and tested and are able to withstand the test of time. ADT or Vivint are going to get my money. I would say if they don’t have the ability to upgrade their website in 2017 what can you say abou their security system technology?
Chris T. says
I’m located in the Manvel area and would attest to the dangerous amounts of people left homeless and severe damage. I am looking into getting myself a new system in place. Thanks for this comprehensive list, I will have to check out Fort Knox Security System. $15.95/mo is not a bad price when comparable security systems can start at $100+.
Amanda Joy says
The looting that occurred in Houston after Hurricane Harvey was bad. I would say it would be on the safe side to have some sort of home security in place, even more so, after a natural disaster like this where people can get desperate. I would recommend a trusted security system that has been around for a while. Do your own due diligence! Cheers.
