Phone alerts are useful, but they are not the primary warning layer

Understand monitored sensors and alarm listeners
A security provider may offer a dedicated smoke/CO sensor, a smoke-alarm listener, or another documented integration. These are different designs. A dedicated enrolled sensor detects the hazards listed for that device. A listener does not detect smoke; it listens for a supported alarm sound and reports through the security hub.

A listener is supplemental. If the underlying smoke alarm fails, is expired, is missing, is silenced, is too far away, or does not produce the supported pattern, the listener cannot repair that life-safety gap. Do not promise that a device “calls 911”
Use precise language for response. A standalone smart alarm may send a household notification. A monitored device may send an eligible event to a monitoring center under an active plan. The monitoring center then follows the provider’s current procedures, which can depend on verification settings, local rules, permits, address data, account status, and the event received.
Ask the provider to put these items in writing:
- Which exact smoke, CO, heat, or listener devices are eligible?
- Which alarm patterns and system modes create a monitoring event?

Never create a live smoke, CO, or fire emergency to test a monitoring claim. Coordinate with the provider and use its documented alarm test mode. Use only approved test methods from the alarm manufacturer.
Smoke and CO are different hazards
A combination alarm may cover both, but the alarm patterns, placement, response, and listener compatibility can differ. Read the exact device markings and manual. Interconnection is a system design, not a checkbox

Yes, great question. Your fire / smoke detectors are always on monitoring as long as your alarm system is online. Then if there is a fire and you don’t have the system armed it will still sound the alarm and notify you and the fire department. Similar to how security cameras and the control panel don’t turn off when the alarm system is ‘disarmed’.

Do ADT smoke detectors have a useful life cycle? When do they need to be replaced? Typical big box detectors need to be replaced every 10 years.

So all in all, an ADT smoke detector (actual unit) is no different then what we already have installed. Do they use the same KIDDE brand? Theirs is just connected to the security system so if it does go off, the fire station is alerted whereas the one I have will only make noise. Thanks for the clarification post!

I’m guessing the hush button to use while you are cooking would not make the alarm trigger the fire department for a span of time? My husband is a volunteer fireman and several times a year gets called out for “false alarms” from cooking at two different residents nearby. Not sure what brand of fire alarms they are using though. I’m guessing that the hush setting is only active for a space of time so you don’t forget to switch it back on?

Thanks for this in depth article on ADT’s fire detectors. I’m a big fan of this, if you are going to have your home protected and monitored by ADT I definitely recommend getting a fire detector with them. This way your home is connected with the fire department and you have a much higher chance of them getting to your place and stopping the fire then if you are not home and come back to see it in pieces. There is no extra monthly fee, you may just pay extra for the smoke detectors depending how many you get.
