Swann is an Australian-founded camera company (est. 1987) that makes budget surveillance cameras, NVR/DVR systems, and video doorbells. They do not sell alarm systems, sensors, or monitoring services — Swann is cameras only. If you want a complete security system, you need to look elsewhere. But if you want affordable standalone cameras with local storage and no monthly fees, Swann is worth considering.

What Swann Does Well
| Strength | Details | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Local storage | NVR/DVR systems store footage locally — no cloud required | If NVR is stolen, footage is gone |
| No monthly fees | Cameras work fully without subscription | Cloud backup is extra ($5-10/mo) |
| Budget pricing | 4-camera NVR kits from $300-500 | Build quality matches the price |
| Color night vision | Enforcer line has spotlight-based color night vision | Spotlight alerts burglars to camera location |
| True Detect heat sensing | PIR-based motion reduces false alerts from trees/rain | Not as advanced as AI person detection |
| Australian company | Good for AU/NZ buyers — local support, power standards | US support is weaker |
What Swann Gets Wrong
| Problem | Impact | Better Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| No alarm system | Cameras alone don’t prevent break-ins — no sirens, no sensors, no monitoring | Abode Smart Security Kit ($199) |
| No professional monitoring | Nobody calls police if you miss an alert | Abode Connect+ monitoring ($13/mo) |
| Weak smart home integration | Basic Alexa/Google — no HomeKit, no Z-Wave, no automations | Abode (HomeKit + Alexa + Google + Z-Wave) |
| App reliability issues | Frequent complaints about Swann Security app crashing, slow loading | Ring or Abode apps are significantly more stable |
| Cloud storage pricing | $5-10/mo per camera for cloud backup adds up fast with multiple cameras | Abode Cam 2 includes cloud with plan |
| No entry sensors | Can’t detect doors/windows opening — camera has to “see” the intruder | Any alarm system (Abode, Ring, SimpliSafe) |
| DVR/NVR vulnerability | Burglars steal the recorder → all footage gone | Cloud backup or hybrid system |
| Inconsistent firmware updates | Older models get abandoned quickly | Ring and Abode maintain updates longer |
Cameras vs. Security Systems: The Critical Gap
This is the fundamental problem with Swann (and any camera-only setup): cameras record crimes, they don’t prevent them.
| Capability | Swann Cameras | Complete Security System (Abode) |
|---|---|---|
| Detects door/window opening | ❌ | ✅ |
| Sounds siren during break-in | ❌ | ✅ 104dB siren |
| Calls police automatically | ❌ | ✅ (with monitoring) |
| Geofencing auto-arm | ❌ | ✅ |
| Smoke/CO detection | ❌ | ✅ |
| Water leak detection | ❌ | ✅ |
| Smart lock control | ❌ | ✅ |
| Video recording | ✅ | ✅ (Abode Cam 2) |
| Motion detection | ✅ | ✅ |
| Phone alerts | ✅ | ✅ |
| Works during power outage | ❌ (wired models) | ✅ (battery backup) |
| HomeKit support | ❌ | ✅ |
Bottom line: Swann gives you evidence after a crime. A security system like Abode aims to prevent the crime entirely.
3-Year Cost Comparison
| Setup | Equipment | Monthly | 3-Year Total | What You Get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swann 4-cam NVR kit | $400 | $0 | $400 | 4 cameras, local recording, no monitoring |
| Swann 4-cam + cloud | $400 | $30 (4x$7.50) | $1,480 | 4 cameras + cloud backup |
| Abode Kit + Cam 2 | $234 | $0 | $234 | Alarm + camera + sensors, self-monitored |
| Abode Kit + Cam 2 + monitoring | $234 | $13 | $702 | Full alarm + camera + pro monitoring |
| Ring 4-cam + alarm | $500 | $20 | $1,220 | 4 cameras + alarm + monitoring |
| Wyze 4-cam kit | $120 | $8 (Cam Plus) | $408 | 4 cameras, cloud AI detection |
Swann’s NVR kit is cheap upfront, but you get zero security — just surveillance. Abode’s Smart Security Kit + Cam 2 costs less and gives you a complete alarm system with a camera, sensors, and optional professional monitoring.

The Best Approach: Swann + Alarm System
If you like Swann’s cameras but want real security, pair them with a proper alarm system:
- Abode Smart Security Kit ($199) — handles alarm, sensors, monitoring, smart home
- Swann NVR kit ($300-500) — handles multi-camera surveillance with local storage
- Abode Connect+ monitoring ($13/mo) — police dispatch when alarm triggers
Total: ~$500-700 upfront + $13/mo. You get the best of both worlds — Swann’s local 4K recording plus Abode’s alarm/monitoring/smart home. That said, for most homeowners, Abode’s Cam 2 ($35) eliminates the need for separate Swann cameras entirely.
FAQ
Is Swann a good security system?
Swann is not a security system — it’s a camera system. There’s a critical difference. Swann cameras record footage but can’t detect door openings, sound a siren, or call police. For actual security, you need an alarm system like Abode paired with cameras.
Does Swann require a monthly subscription?
No. Swann cameras with NVR/DVR systems work completely without a subscription. Local storage is included. Cloud backup (Swann Security subscription) is optional at $5-10/month per camera.
Can Swann cameras work with Abode?
Not directly — Swann doesn’t integrate with third-party alarm systems. However, you can run both systems independently. Abode handles alarm/monitoring, Swann handles multi-camera surveillance. They complement each other without needing to integrate.
Swann vs Ring cameras — which is better?
Ring wins for smart home integration (Alexa ecosystem, Ring Alarm compatibility). Swann wins for local storage and avoiding monthly fees. If you already have or plan to get a Ring Alarm, use Ring cameras. If you want Abode for your alarm, either works as supplementary cameras — but Abode’s own Cam 2 is the simplest option.
Are Swann cameras reliable?
Hardware is decent for the price. The main complaints are about the Swann Security app (crashes, slow loading) and firmware update consistency. Wired NVR/DVR setups are more reliable than their Wi-Fi cameras. For critical security, don’t rely solely on Swann — pair with a proper alarm system.
What’s the best budget alternative to Swann?
Wyze cameras ($25-50) offer similar or better features at lower prices, with better AI detection. For a complete budget security solution, Abode’s Smart Security Kit ($199) plus a $35 Cam 2 beats any camera-only setup for total home protection.

I purchased a Swann 2k series 4 camera 1080 P. It has been the worst purchase of my life. After paying electricians over $500 to install the system I was out a thousand dollars. By the time I organised electricians and delivery being 10 days in-transit, at least 3 weeks had gone by. The system is extremely complicated and would not accept my email among other issues and it took a few more weeks for me to figure out that it didn’t work like had been promised. The cameras only recorded people moving once they were 6 feet from the camera, and the only thing they would pick up in the distance were 2 or 3 cars a day that drove by my place, when over 100 cars drive by my place a day. And they picked up nothing in my yard or driveway. At 8 weeks they stopped working completely and Swann would not give me a refund as it was over 30 days. Their corporate office wouldn’t even give me a reply after that about who would pay for the second install, and why did the cameras not have the range or ability to pick up anything past 6 feet? My 7 foot ladder was stolen during this time and my son’s car was broken in to as well. I spent an entire onerous day ( up and down ladders, taking photos of every plug, etc.) with their tech team to confirm to them that the system was indeed not working, and they still would not honor their warranty. I hate to say it but the camera only work when they want. Sometimes I get a good picture on my phone but most of the time only one cam works and it is never the one I want to see. I am really frustrated but I live in a fairly safe neighborhood so there is that.

hHave had Swann for a few years now. NOTHING but problems. Tech support is in some foreign country. Glenn Beasley is exactly right — they read from a script, each tech having you do the same thing over and over and over. they have NO idea how to figure out your problem.

PURCHASED MY 4200 SYSTEM 4 YEARS AGO AND NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. THERE IS NO TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, THEY READ FROM SCRIPT AND CANT DIAGNOIS A PROBLEM. THEY JUST HAD ME PURCHASE A HARD DRIVE FOR $70 AFTER I MADE AN ADJUSTMENT ON A CAMERA THE SYSTEM BOOTS UP AND SHUTS DOWN. I HAD A FEELING THE HARDRIVE WOULDNT FIX IT BUT TOOK A CHANCE. I HAD MY BROTHER BUY THE SAME UNIT I DID AND HE TOSSED HIS LAST YEAR. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT. IN MY OPINION PURE JUNK AND NO ASSISTANCE WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROBLEM

Purchased the Swann Professional HD Security System and hooked it up today. Seemed decent for about an hour. I believed all was good, had dinner, searched the internet and came up to check on the system. It has frozen with only 5 of the possible 16 cameras and no matter what I’ve tried, I can not get it to reload the video inputs. Customer support online troubleshooting leaves you in terminal hold without ever answering your inquiry. Definitely not top notch customer service or a high quality system. I will be returning it in the morning.

Swann box claims you can record for 80 days. That a false statement ! That may work , and this comes from their reps also, if you use 1 camera at a very low resolution and only for a few hours a day. But their reps don’t actually recommend using low resolution I googled my question and an answer came up that is complicated and meant for technical people and not an average DIY guy. Thanks to their false claims I have lost video that I needed. I do not recommend Swann Security .

dvr failed shortly after 1 year warranty , swann did not care . paid $750 for this system. bought a new dvr on line for $4o ,not swann so that means swann had about $15 in their dvr. that is how much they care!
