First Alert Security Products: From Legacy DVRs to Smart Smoke Detectors
First Alert has been a household name in home safety since 1958. But here’s what most people don’t realize: First Alert doesn’t make security systems — they make safety products (smoke detectors, CO alarms, fire extinguishers, safes) and a few standalone cameras. If you’re looking for a complete home security system, you’re in the wrong aisle.
This review covers what First Alert actually offers in 2026, what they discontinued, and what to buy instead.
First Alert at a Glance (2026)
| Category | Status | Our Take |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Smoke/CO Detectors | ✅ Active — Onelink line | Good products, especially Onelink Safe & Sound |
| Traditional Smoke/CO | ✅ Active — market leader | Reliable, affordable, available everywhere |
| Fire Extinguishers | ✅ Active | Household standard |
| Fireproof Safes | ✅ Active — under SentrySafe brand (same parent) | Decent budget options |
| Security Cameras (D-575, etc.) | ❌ Discontinued | Don’t buy — no support, no app, outdated |
| DVR Systems | ❌ Discontinued | Replaced by modern cloud cameras |
| Home Security Systems | ❌ Never offered | Not their business — use Abode or Ring instead |
What First Alert Does Well: Smart Smoke & CO Detectors
First Alert’s Onelink line is where they actually compete in 2026. These are genuinely good products:
Onelink Safe & Sound
- Smoke + CO detection with voice alerts (tells you the threat AND location)
- Built-in premium speaker (AirPlay 2 compatible)
- Apple HomeKit & Alexa integration
- 10-year sealed battery backup
- Price: ~$119
Onelink Smoke & CO Detector
- Photoelectric smoke + electrochemical CO sensing
- Apple HomeKit compatible
- Phone alerts when you’re away
- 10-year battery
- Price: ~$99
How They Compare to Nest Protect
| Feature | First Alert Onelink Safe & Sound | Nest Protect | Kidde Smart Detect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $119 | $129 | $45 |
| Smoke Detection | Photoelectric | Split-spectrum | Photoelectric |
| CO Detection | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Voice Alerts | ✅ Location-specific | ✅ Location-specific | ✅ Basic |
| Phone Alerts | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| HomeKit | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ |
| Alexa/Google | ✅ Alexa only | ✅ Google only | ✅ Both |
| Built-in Speaker | ✅ Premium AirPlay | ❌ | ❌ |
| Pathlight (night light) | ❌ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Self-Test | ✅ Monthly | ✅ Nightly | ✅ Monthly |
| Battery Life | 10 years | Wired + backup | 10 years |
Verdict: The Onelink Safe & Sound wins for Apple/HomeKit households (it’s one of the best HomeKit smoke detectors). Nest Protect wins for Google households with its superior split-spectrum sensing and Pathlight feature.
The D-575 and Legacy Cameras: Don’t Buy These
If you found this page searching for the First Alert D-575 or any First Alert camera system, here’s the reality:
- The D-575 digital wireless security system was discontinued years ago
- No firmware updates, no app support, no cloud integration
- Uses outdated 2.4GHz wireless that’s easily interfered with
- No AI detection, no person/vehicle alerts, no integration with anything
- Resolution was 640×480 — worse than a 2010 smartphone
If you still own one: it served its time. Here’s what to replace it with:
Best Camera Replacements for First Alert Systems
| If You Need… | Get This | Price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget indoor camera | Wyze Cam v4 | $35 | Color night vision, person detection, local + cloud storage |
| Indoor + security system | Abode Cam 2 | $35 | Integrates with Abode security system, motion zones, 2-way audio |
| Outdoor surveillance | Ring Stick Up Cam | $99 | Weather-proof, battery or wired, Ring ecosystem |
| Full NVR system (like D-575) | Reolink RLK8-410B4 | $280 | 4 cameras + NVR, 4K, PoE, no subscription |
| Complete security system | Abode Smart Security Kit | $199 | Full alarm system + cameras + sensors + no contract |
Cameras vs. Security Systems: The Critical Distinction
This is the biggest mistake people make when shopping for “First Alert security”: cameras record crimes, security systems prevent them.
| Feature | Cameras Only (First Alert, Wyze, etc.) | Security System (Abode, Ring Alarm, etc.) |
|---|---|---|
| Door/window sensors | ❌ | ✅ |
| Siren | ❌ (some cameras have small speakers) | ✅ 105dB+ |
| Professional monitoring | ❌ | ✅ Optional |
| Police dispatch | ❌ | ✅ With monitoring |
| Geofencing auto-arm | ❌ | ✅ |
| Glass break detection | ❌ | ✅ |
| Smoke/CO monitoring | ❌ | ✅ (integrates with detectors) |
| Insurance discount | Usually no | 5–20% discount |
| Burglar deterrent level | Low–Medium | High |
Bottom line: If you’re upgrading from a First Alert camera system, consider a complete security system like Abode ($199, no contract, free self-monitoring) rather than just replacing cameras. You’ll get actual protection instead of just footage of things going wrong.
Monitored Smoke & CO Detection: The Real Upgrade
First Alert makes great standalone detectors, but they only alert you locally. If you want monitored fire/CO detection — where a monitoring center calls the fire department even when you’re not home — you need a security system with compatible smoke sensors:
| System | Smoke/CO Sensor | Monitoring Cost | Fire Dispatch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abode | Abode Smoke Alarm Monitor ($30) | $6–$20/mo | ✅ On Standard+ plans |
| Ring | First Alert Z-Wave ($40) | $20/mo | ✅ Ring Protect Pro |
| SimpliSafe | SimpliSafe Smoke ($30) | $28/mo | ✅ Fast Protect |
| ADT | ADT Smoke Detector ($100+) | $28–$60/mo | ✅ All plans |
This is the most important upgrade you can make: a smoke detector that actually dispatches help when you’re not home.
The First Alert / Resideo / BRK Corporate Confusion
If you’ve tried shopping for First Alert products, you’ve probably noticed confusing branding. Here’s the corporate family tree:
- Resideo Technologies — Parent company (spun off from Honeywell in 2018)
- First Alert — Consumer brand for smoke detectors, CO alarms, safety products
- BRK Electronics — Same company as First Alert (manufacturing brand)
- Onelink — First Alert’s smart product line
- SentrySafe — Fireproof safes brand (same parent company)
When buying: First Alert, BRK, and Onelink are all the same company. The Onelink products are the smart/connected versions of their traditional safety products.
Our Recommendation
For smoke/CO detection: First Alert Onelink products are genuinely good — especially for HomeKit users. They’re our #2 pick behind Nest Protect.
For security cameras: Skip First Alert entirely. Get modern cameras from Abode, Ring, Nest, or Wyze.
For a complete security system: First Alert doesn’t make one. Get Abode Smart Security Kit ($199) — it can integrate with First Alert Z-Wave smoke detectors for the best of both worlds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does First Alert make a home security system?
No. First Alert makes smoke detectors, CO alarms, fire extinguishers, safes, and some standalone cameras — but not complete security systems. For a security system, look at Abode, Ring, or SimpliSafe.
Is the First Alert D-575 still worth buying?
No. The D-575 digital wireless recording system has been discontinued with no software updates, no cloud support, and outdated 640×480 resolution. Replace it with a modern Wi-Fi camera or full security system.
What’s the best First Alert smoke detector?
The First Alert Onelink Safe & Sound ($119) is the best for Apple/HomeKit homes. For Google homes, Nest Protect ($129) is better. For budget, the standard First Alert SC7010BV hardwired combo ($35) is reliable.
Can First Alert detectors work with a security system?
Yes — First Alert makes Z-Wave compatible smoke/CO detectors that integrate with Ring, Abode, and other Z-Wave security systems. This gives you monitored fire detection with professional dispatch. The First Alert ZCOMBO-G is the most popular Z-Wave model.
Is First Alert the same as BRK?
Yes. BRK Electronics and First Alert are the same company — both owned by Resideo Technologies (formerly part of Honeywell). BRK is the manufacturing brand; First Alert is the consumer brand. Products are identical.
What happened to First Alert cameras?
First Alert discontinued their camera products (D-575, indoor cameras) several years ago. They never invested in the cloud infrastructure or AI detection needed to compete with Ring, Nest, and modern camera brands. Their focus returned to their core strength: fire safety products.

Ken Speert says
I wouldn’t recommend buying a first alert smartbridge system at all! I’ve had one for less than 2 years and both cameras at the same time stopped working, screen went black and the tecs at their company says they stopped making the system? their tecs says they are only warrentied for 1 year and couldn’t help me with any solutions for getting them working again. Go to another company who will help and back their product.
Larry Cole says
Yeah it may be a great nuisance because it blows off at almost every motion, the motion detector and glass break detector is super sensitive and one can get alerted over such actions very quickly. The sensor had saved my house from been burgled on two occasions and it’s been helpful.

Good summary of the Digital Wireless Security System. I have one thing to add about the SD Card funcitonality. There are some SD cards that do have larger amounts of space, for example, you can get one that has over 32 gigs of space. So that should be enough space for the average family.
