SimpliSafe vs Ring 2026: $18/mo DIY Alarm vs $20/mo Amazon Cameras — 3-Year Costs, Monitoring, and Why Neither Supports HomeKit

Last Updated: April 2026

SimpliSafe and Ring are the two biggest names in DIY home security, but they take different approaches. SimpliSafe is a sensors-first alarm system with optional cameras. Ring is a cameras-first ecosystem backed by Amazon, with an alarm tacked on. Both charge $20/month for full monitoring — but what you get for that $20 is very different.

We broke down equipment, monitoring, cameras, smart home support, and 3-year costs to help you decide. (Spoiler: there’s a third option that beats both.)

Quick Comparison

HomeKitNoNo
Z-Wave / ZigbeeNo (proprietary sensors)Z-Wave (alarm sensors)
Active Guard / Video VerificationYes ($27.99/mo tier)No

Where SimpliSafe Wins

1. Active Guard Video Verification

SimpliSafe’s Fast Protect plan ($27.99/mo) includes Active Guard: when an alarm triggers, the monitoring center can view your cameras to verify the threat before dispatching. This cuts false alarm fines and speeds up police response. Ring has no equivalent.

2. Cellular-First Alarm Signal

SimpliSafe sends alarm signals over cellular by default — not WiFi. If an intruder cuts your internet or power, the alarm still reaches the monitoring center. Ring’s base station uses WiFi for alarm signals unless you pay for the $20/mo Ring Protect Plus plan that includes cellular backup.

3. Self-Contained System

SimpliSafe works as a complete alarm system out of the box. No Amazon account needed, no ecosystem lock-in. Ring is tightly integrated with Amazon — and shares data with law enforcement through the Neighbors app (opt-out required).

Where Ring Wins

1. Camera Ecosystem

Ring has 20+ camera models: doorbells, floodlights, spotlights, indoor, outdoor, stick-up, pan-tilt. SimpliSafe has 4 cameras. If cameras are your priority, Ring wins by volume and variety.

2. One Plan Covers Everything

Ring Protect Plus ($20/mo) covers unlimited cameras AND the alarm with 24/7 monitoring. SimpliSafe charges $17.99/mo for alarm monitoring, but camera cloud storage and Active Guard push it to $27.99/mo. For a camera-heavy setup, Ring is cheaper.

3. Amazon/Alexa Integration

Ring has the deepest Alexa integration of any security brand. Announce “Alexa, I’m leaving” and arm the system. See camera feeds on Echo Show. Get Alexa Guard glass-break detection for free. SimpliSafe works with Alexa, but the integration is surface-level.

4. Neighborhood Features

Ring’s Neighbors app shows local crime reports and lets you share footage. Controversial from a privacy standpoint, but useful for community awareness.

What Both Get Wrong

  • No HomeKit: Neither supports Apple Home. If you’re in the Apple ecosystem, both are non-starters. Abode is the only DIY system with HomeKit support.
  • No free camera storage: Both require a subscription for cloud recording. No local storage fallback. eufy and Reolink store locally for $0/mo.
  • No Z-Wave flexibility (SimpliSafe): SimpliSafe uses proprietary sensors. You can’t add third-party Z-Wave locks, lights, or sensors. Ring at least supports Z-Wave for its alarm sensors.
  • Privacy concerns (Ring): Ring has faced scrutiny over law enforcement data sharing and employee access to customer footage. SimpliSafe has a cleaner privacy track record.

3-Year Cost Comparison

SetupEquipmentMonthly3-Year Total
SimpliSafe (Standard monitoring)$250$17.99$898
SimpliSafe (Fast Protect + cameras)$450$27.99$1,458
Ring (Protect Plus)$199$20$919
Ring (+ 3 cameras)$499$20$1,219
Abode (Connect plan)$199$6$415
Abode (Pro monitoring)$199$20$919

At equivalent monitoring levels, Abode’s Connect plan saves $483–$1,043 over 3 years compared to SimpliSafe or Ring. Same 24/7 monitoring at $6/mo vs $18–$28/mo.

The Third Option: Abode

Abode does what neither SimpliSafe nor Ring can:

  • HomeKit + Alexa + Google: Works with all three ecosystems. Neither SimpliSafe nor Ring supports HomeKit.
  • Free self-monitoring that actually works: Full system functionality at $0/mo. Add 24/7 pro monitoring for $6/mo (Connect) or $20/mo (Pro).
  • Z-Wave + Zigbee: Add third-party smart locks (Schlage, Yale), lights, and sensors. SimpliSafe is locked to proprietary hardware.
  • No Amazon dependency: No data sharing with law enforcement. No ecosystem lock-in.

Verdict: Which Should You Pick?

  • Pick SimpliSafe if: You want video-verified alarm dispatching (Active Guard) and don’t care about cameras or HomeKit.
  • Pick Ring if: You’re deep in the Amazon/Alexa ecosystem and want 10+ cameras under one $20/mo plan.
  • Pick Abode if: You want HomeKit support, the lowest monitoring cost ($6/mo), Z-Wave smart home integration, or you just don’t want to pay $18–$28/mo for alarm monitoring that costs $6 elsewhere.
