Wyze vs Reolink 2026: $28 Budget Cameras vs $400 PoE NVR Kit — Which Is Actually Cheaper Over 3 Years?

Last Updated: March 2026

Wyze and Reolink are the two cheapest ways to get security cameras without a subscription. Wyze sells $20-$50 cameras aimed at first-time buyers. Reolink sells $50-$250 cameras aimed at people building a proper surveillance system. Same budget market, very different products.

Where Wyze Wins

1. Entry Price

A Wyze Cam v4 costs $28. Nothing from Reolink touches that. If you want one camera for a baby monitor, pet cam, or front window, Wyze is the cheapest way in.

2. Basic Alarm System

Wyze Home Monitoring System (HMS) adds door/window sensors, a hub, and Noonlight monitoring for $10/month. It’s basic, but Reolink doesn’t offer any alarm functionality. If you want cameras plus an alarm from one brand at the lowest possible price, Wyze is it.

3. Pan-and-Tilt at $34

The Wyze Pan Cam v3 offers motorized pan/tilt/zoom for $34. Reolink’s cheapest PTZ camera is $70+. For covering a large room from one mount point, Wyze’s budget PTZ is hard to beat.

Where Reolink Wins

1. Video Quality

Reolink’s entire 2026 lineup shoots 4K. Most Wyze cameras cap at 2K, with many older models still at 1080p. The Argus 4 Pro’s 180-degree FOV in 4K produces footage that’s useful for identifying faces and license plates. Wyze footage is usable but noticeably softer.

2. Free AI Detection

Reolink includes person, vehicle, and pet detection free on every camera. Wyze’s free tier gives you motion-only alerts with 12-second cloud clips and a 5-minute cooldown between events. Person detection on Wyze requires Cam Plus ($2-4/month per camera). For 4+ cameras, those Wyze subscriptions add up fast.

3. PoE and NVR Systems

Reolink’s 8-channel PoE NVR kit ($400-600) records continuously from 8 wired cameras to a local hard drive. Weeks of 4K footage, no WiFi dependency, no subscriptions. Wyze has nothing comparable — all cameras are WiFi-only with microSD as the only local option (which fills up quickly at higher resolutions).

4. Reliability

PoE cameras don’t drop offline when your router restarts. They don’t compete for WiFi bandwidth with your streaming devices. For a multi-camera system running 24/7, Reolink’s wired approach is fundamentally more reliable than Wyze’s WiFi-only ecosystem.

5. Privacy

Reolink has a clean record. Wyze had a data breach in 2022 that exposed data for roughly 13,000 users, and the company was slow to disclose it. Reolink cameras can run entirely on local storage with zero cloud connectivity if you prefer.

3-Year Cost (4 Cameras, No Subscription)

CostWyzeReolink
4 cameras$112-160$400 (NVR kit)
Cam Plus for AI (optional)$144-288/year$0
3-year total (free tier)$112-160$400
3-year total (with AI)$544-1,024$400

Wyze looks cheaper upfront, but add Cam Plus subscriptions for AI detection and it costs more than Reolink over 3 years. And Reolink’s NVR gives you continuous recording that Wyze can’t match at any price.

Which Should You Buy?

Buy Wyze if: You need 1-2 cheap cameras and don’t care about video quality or AI detection. Great for a baby monitor, pet cam, or single-room use. The $28 entry price is unbeatable.

Buy Reolink if: You’re building a real surveillance system with 3+ cameras. The NVR kit is the sweet spot — continuous 4K recording from wired cameras for a one-time cost. Better quality, better reliability, better privacy, and cheaper over time once you factor in Wyze subscriptions.

Neither is a security system. For actual intrusion detection with sensors, sirens, and professional monitoring, pair your cameras with Abode ($0-20/month).
