Protect America is dead. Once a top-5 DIY alarm company with over 100,000 subscribers, Protect America filed for bankruptcy in October 2021 and ceased all operations by 2023. The company that pioneered mail-order home security couldn’t survive the DIY revolution it helped start. If you’re a former customer still running Protect America equipment, here’s the complete story — and exactly what to do next.
What Happened to Protect America? (Complete Timeline)
Protect America’s collapse wasn’t sudden — it was a slow decline that accelerated when Ring and SimpliSafe made contracts and outdated equipment irrelevant.
| Year | Event | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| 1992 | Founded in Austin, TX | Pioneer of DIY-installed, professionally monitored home security — ship equipment, customer installs, company monitors |
| 2007 | Acquired by private equity (Knight Capital) | Growth-via-contracts strategy begins — aggressive radio/podcast advertising |
| 2010–2015 | Peak growth: 100K+ subscribers | Major player alongside ADT, Vivint, Monitronics — heavy radio ads on Rush Limbaugh, podcasts |
| 2013 | Ring launches ($199 doorbell) — camera revolution begins | Protect America has no camera strategy |
| 2014 | SimpliSafe drops contracts — month-to-month monitoring | Protect America’s 36-month contracts become a competitive liability |
| 2017 | Subscriber churn accelerates — Ring Alarm launches at $199 | Protect America losing customers faster than acquiring new ones |
| 2018 | GE/Interlogix announces discontinuation of security products | Protect America’s entire equipment platform loses manufacturer support |
| 2019 | BBB rating drops, customer complaints surge | Cancellation difficulties, equipment failures, support wait times |
| 2020 | Interlogix officially shuts down — no replacement parts | Protect America can’t service its own equipment |
| Oct 2021 | Files Chapter 7 bankruptcy | Liquidation, not reorganization — the company is done |
| 2022 | Remaining accounts sold/transferred | Some customers shifted to other monitoring dealers |
| 2023 | All operations cease — website goes dark | No support, no monitoring, no service |
Why Protect America Failed (5 Fatal Mistakes)
| Fatal Mistake | What Happened | What Competitors Did Instead |
|---|---|---|
| 1. 36-month contracts | Required 3-year commitments when consumers increasingly demanded flexibility | SimpliSafe, Ring, Abode — all offer no-contract monitoring |
| 2. No camera ecosystem | Never developed cameras or video monitoring while Ring built an empire on doorbells | Ring, SimpliSafe, Abode all offer integrated cameras ($35-$180) |
| 3. Defunct equipment | Built entire platform on GE/Interlogix panels and 319.5MHz sensors — manufacturer shut down in 2020 | Modern systems use Z-Wave, Zigbee, proprietary protocols with active R&D |
| 4. Resold Alarm.com at premium | Charged $20-$46/mo for Alarm.com monitoring that dealers offer for $15-$25/mo | Abode: free self-monitoring, $6-$20/mo pro monitoring with own platform |
| 5. No smart home strategy | No HomeKit, limited Alexa/Google, no geofencing, no modern automations | Abode: HomeKit + Alexa + Google + Z-Wave + Zigbee + Matter |
The Alarm Company Graveyard (It’s Not Just Protect America)
Protect America isn’t alone. The home security industry has a pattern of acquisitions, bankruptcies, and abandoned customers. If your current provider is on this list, consider switching before the same thing happens:
| Company | What Happened | Year | Customers Affected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protect America | Chapter 7 bankruptcy — liquidated | 2021 | ~50K |
| Nest Secure | Discontinued by Google — no replacement | 2020 | Unknown |
| AT&T Digital Life | Shut down by AT&T — customers moved to Brinks | 2021 | ~300K |
| Cox Homelife | Discontinued — cable company exits security | 2023 | ~100K |
| LiveWatch | Acquired by Monitronics/Brinks — brand killed | 2017 | ~30K |
| ASG Security | Acquired by Guardian Protection | 2018 | ~40K |
| Security Networks | Acquired by Monitronics/Brinks | 2016 | ~25K |
| Zmodo | Brand fading — no new products since 2021 | Ongoing | Unknown |
| Westec Security | Acquired by Interface Systems — residential killed | 2012 | Unknown |
The pattern: Companies that rely on long contracts, outdated equipment, and dealer networks eventually fail. Companies that compete on product quality and no-contract value — like Abode, Ring, and SimpliSafe — survive because customers choose to stay, not because they’re locked in.
What Former Customers Should Do Right Now
Step 1: Stop Paying Protect America
| Situation | Action | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Still being charged monthly | Dispute with bank/credit card | Protect America is no longer providing contracted services. File a chargeback for any post-shutdown charges. |
| Account transferred to another company | Review new contract carefully | Some accounts were sold to dealers — you may be in a new contract you didn’t agree to. You can dispute this. |
| Contract expired, just haven’t cancelled | Stop payment immediately | No service is being provided. Cancel the recurring payment. |
| Equipment financed separately | Check if loan is with a third party | Some equipment was financed through separate lenders — the loan may still be active even if monitoring stopped. |
Step 2: Assess Your Equipment
| Equipment Type | Frequency | Compatible With Modern Systems? | What to Do |
|---|---|---|---|
| GE/Interlogix sensors | 319.5 MHz | ❌ Not compatible with any current DIY system | Recycle — no resale value, no modern system supports this frequency |
| Honeywell/2GIG sensors | 345 MHz | ⚠️ Compatible with some Alarm.com panels, 2GIG, Honeywell VISTA | Can reuse if you go with Alarm Grid or Alarm Relay monitoring — but not with Abode/Ring/SimpliSafe |
| GE/Interlogix panel | N/A | ❌ Manufacturer shut down in 2020 | No updates, no parts, security vulnerabilities — replace immediately |
| Alarm.com module | N/A | ⚠️ May work with a new dealer | Only if panel is 345MHz Honeywell — contact Alarm Grid to check |
Step 3: Choose a Replacement System

Migration Guide: Protect America → Modern System
| Step | Action | Time | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cancel payments to Protect America | 10 min | Call bank to stop recurring charges. File chargeback for any post-shutdown billing. |
| 2 | Order new system | 5 min | Abode Smart Security Kit ($199) + Abode Cam 2 ($35) = $234 total |
| 3 | Remove old sensors | 15-20 min | Pry off old GE/Interlogix sensors. Use Goo Gone for adhesive residue. Dental floss works on stubborn tape. |
| 4 | Install new sensors | 20-30 min | Peel-and-stick Abode sensors on all entry points (doors, ground-floor windows) |
| 5 | Place hub centrally | 5 min | Where old panel was works great. Plug in, connect to Wi-Fi. |
| 6 | Connect smart home | 5 min | Add to Google Home, Alexa, or HomeKit — whatever you use |
| 7 | Set up geofencing | 5 min | Auto-arm when you leave, auto-disarm when you arrive — never forget again |

Total migration time: About 1 hour. Total cost: $199-$234 for equipment + $0-$20/mo for monitoring. Compare that to Protect America’s $720-$1,656 over 3 years for inferior equipment and service that no longer exists.
3-Year Cost Savings: Protect America vs. Modern Systems
| System | Equipment | Monthly | 3-Year Total | vs. Protect America |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Protect America (was) | “Free” (leased) | $20-$46 | $720-$1,656 | — |
| Abode (free monitoring) | $199 | $0 | $199 | Save $521-$1,457 |
| Abode (Connect+ plan) | $199 | $12 | $631 | Save $89-$1,025 |
| Abode (Pro plan) | $199 | $20 | $919 | Save up to $737 |

Bottom line: Even with the best monitoring plan, modern systems cost less than what Protect America charged for basic service — and you get cameras, smart home, geofencing, and no contracts.
The Lesson: What Protect America’s Death Teaches Us
Protect America’s failure has clear lessons for anyone shopping for home security in 2026:
| Lesson | What Protect America Did Wrong | What to Look For Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Avoid long contracts | 36-month lock-in — if a company needs contracts to retain you, their product isn’t good enough | Month-to-month or no contract (Abode, Ring, SimpliSafe) |
| Own your equipment | Leased equipment became worthless when company folded — customers left with nothing | Buy equipment outright — it’s yours even if you switch providers |
| Check manufacturer support | Built on GE/Interlogix hardware that was discontinued — no updates, no parts, no patches | Active equipment manufacturers with OTA updates |
| Demand cameras | Zero camera ecosystem in an era where Ring sold 20M+ doorbells | Integrated cameras from $35 (Abode Cam 2) |
| Research the company | Declining BBB rating, mounting complaints, and radio silence were warning signs | Check BBB, Trustpilot, and Reddit before committing |
| Avoid dealer middlemen | Protect America was essentially an Alarm.com dealer charging 2x the going rate | Direct-to-consumer companies with their own platforms |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Protect America still in business?
No. Protect America filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2021 and ceased all operations by 2023. They are not accepting new customers, not providing monitoring, and not offering support. If you’re still being charged, dispute the charges with your bank.
Can I cancel my Protect America contract without a fee?
Yes. Since Protect America has shut down and is no longer providing contracted services, you can cancel without an early termination fee. Contact your bank to stop recurring payments and file a chargeback for any post-shutdown charges.
Can I reuse my Protect America sensors with a new system?
Almost certainly not. GE/Interlogix sensors (319.5MHz) are incompatible with every modern DIY system. If you have 345MHz Honeywell sensors, they may work with Alarm Grid or Alarm.com panels — but not Abode, Ring, or SimpliSafe. New sensors are cheap: Abode Mini sensors are $15 each.
What’s the best replacement for Protect America?
Abode is the ideal replacement — same DIY philosophy but with modern equipment, cameras, smart home integration, and no contracts. The Smart Security Kit ($199) gives you everything you need to get started.
My account was transferred to another company. What should I do?
Some Protect America accounts were sold to dealer companies during bankruptcy. Review any new contract carefully — you may not have agreed to the terms. If they auto-enrolled you, you may have grounds to dispute. Contact your state Attorney General if a company is billing you under a contract you never signed.
Why do alarm companies keep going bankrupt?
The traditional alarm model — long contracts, dealer networks, outdated hardware — is dying. Companies that compete on lock-in rather than product quality can’t survive when consumers have contract-free options. Monitronics/Brinks also went through bankruptcy. Choose companies where security is the core mission and the product is good enough to keep you without a contract.

Growing up with Law and Order and CSI shows taught Isabelle Landau one thing: if people back then had high-quality home security systems, those series would have been way shorter. In our modern world, technology helps us keep burglars away easily, and this is what Izzy studies and writes about: alarm systems, home security, protection systems, and more.

Kailey says
This company is keeping up with the changes in home security so when I moved I decided to stay with them. They weren’t a pain in the butt when moving too. I’ve heard horror stories of having to pay off early termination fees and was worried that they were going to charge high costs. Sure every story isn’t the same but they took care of me when I thought they wouldn’t.
Cheryl Hargrave says
If you receive and install your home monitoring system during the middle of the month you will be billed for the whole month and again on the first of the next month. They do not pro-rate your bill for the first month! Therefore, be prepared to pay 2 bills in one month.
Alarm Reviews says
Thanks for heads up. Pro-rated billing is very common in the industry but you can also have a say on what date you want it taken out on. The first bill can be a bit confusing for people but by the 2nd you should see the rate they promised you or else there is problems.
Y. Dominguez says
On March 24, 2018 I received my alarm equipment, but was not installed until April 2, 2018. I was verbally told by the sales representative who helped me, that I had “14 days from installation date (April 2. 2018) to return the alarm system if I was not satisfied and would receive a full refund. On April 9, 2018 the alarm system went off and I was never called nor did I get a notification from the app downloaded on my phone. The only person that was contacted was my emergency contact, which should not be called unless they can not reach me. The police then arrived at my home and stated they had been notified around 40 mins prior to their arrival. On April 10, 2018 I contacted Protect America and spoke to several employees before I could reach a manager “Courtney”. After explaining to her I did not want their services any longer, because I do not feel safe at all and that I was indeed within my 14 days from installation. She stated she would not be able to refund me my money because it was not “14 days from installation” it is “14days from the moment the equipment is received” I expressed that they “can keep the downpayment I just did not want nothing to do with them or their alarm system” She then assured me she would try to help me, and return my call that same night. It us now April 11, 2018 I have conatcted her twice and still no phone call in return.
Anu says
Had a good experience with Protect America until the last 5 months. Had several false alarms and the customer support doesn’t seem to understand or be able to help me. I’ll probably be cancelling at the end of my term with them unless they throw in some sweet deals and fix whatever is going on!
Patrick G. says
When cancelling they don’t prorate so make sure you call them within the 45 day period early on.
Amanda says
I have been with Protect America for about 2 years and here are the issues I have had with them. Sure they could have been avoided if I took time at the beginning to understand the 3 year term agreement and the equipment they use.
For starters, every time I call they have really long wait times before you actually get to talk to a person. They do have a feature that allows you to enter a callback number and they will call you back so you don’t have to wait on hold the entire time. It has taken anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour for them to call back.
My most recent complaint is in regards to moving. Do not use this system if there is a chance that you will be moving during the 3 year contract time frame. I recently moved to a new home. The new house already has a security system installed and all I have to do is call and activate the monitoring service. It is a very nice system with sensors on all the doors and windows, glass breaks, and multiple motion sensors throughout the house. The problem is that I still have about a year left on my contract with Protect America. They will not let me out of my contract. So my choice is install their system at my house and put up with their monitoring service for another year or I can pay for two monitoring services until my contract expires. I am cheap so I am putting up with it for another year. So now I am installing new equipment right next to equipment that is already in the house. And nothing works right. It has been a nightmare to set up the equipment. I have already spent 2.5 hours on the phone trying to get it working and it still isn’t working yet. They are supposed to call me on Saturday where I have blocked off two more hours to get it working. I have no faith that they will actually call on Saturday. Every other time I have requested a call back from a person, it never happens.
I have been in the new house for two weeks and their equipment still isn’t installed and working, so I am paying for a service I am not using.
Catherine Anne says
I called Protect America several times over the week and each time I was put right through. Expected it to be worse for weekend hours, maybe I just got lucky.
Jeri Ellett says
Protect American is OK for a basic wireless system, best for renters. They did keep their commitments.
Renee Lee says
Been with PA for 12 plus years. Now that we are moved out, stopping the service was a bit inconvenient. Just plan ahead of time so you don’t double pay on homes (if you are keeping it up in the previous unit as I was to rent it out). I had to finish out the remainder of the contract I forgot I was in, which renewals annually until you ask them to stop. Got the bumps smoothed out and they helped me with a promo to get the other system up and running.
Harry G Senyo says
First time I called customer support I was on the phone for a long time, only to find out I called the wrong number. When you sign up make sure you also get their monitoring center on speed dial to your phone. Granted, they will be the ones calling you if there is a break in but you can also call them to let them know you are going on a vacation, ask questions etc.
Patel says
Protect America makes the installation smooth and easy once the system arrives to you. You’d have to really be ignorant of instructions to get this thing wrongfully installed. Big bold numbers on each piece of equipment, a simple guide and a phone number to call while you are getting it up and running. Now comes the real test if they call me when the alarm goes off!
Arpy says
Just FYI, there is a $100 for restocking and postage to return it within the first 10 days. So if you buy it, just plan on keeping it!
Donnie says
Thanks for the heads up Arpy! I had no idea they did that. I guess I should mention that in my next call. I had planned on going with them after reading a few reviews but I am glad I find this one. Really breaks it all down and the comments from the people have been super helpful.
Clara says
I am a sucker for any company with a good history. Security companies come and go so frequently. Just look at Protection One who just got bought out by ADT last year for billions of dollars. Small town security shops go out of business frequently so I am not going to rely on them to protect my home.
Vincent says
The self set up feature is great. Not just that Protect America is the best security system I have ever used among all other security I used. I so much like their services.
Andrew S. says
I don’t feel that the basic control panel is a con, it’s a plus. A more complicated panel would be harder to work. Basic is the way to go with home security, otherwise you end up with a bunch of issues. Plus the faster response time is is more important than a basic panel.
Kevin Wuebbels says
I”m glad they have a good rating with the BBB and only 3 percent unsatisfactory.
Kevin Wuebbels says
You can return the equipment if you choose not to use it but they will charge you a restocking fee. Best advice is to just keep it if you are going to buy it in the first place!
Mica says
I was a bit nervous opting for the protect America Security System. But thus far I am satisfied with their services. Best prices available for sure and an easy to setup system you get in the mail only a few days after ordering.
donna says
I have been a customer for 5 years. Service was ok. Cheaper than ADT. But when I had to switch due to the discontinuation of G2 and their switching to Verizon. They make you cancel in writing and then the remaining bill is pro-rated. When your time is up with them or if you decide to switch providers, remember that there is a 30-day cancellation policy after your contract is up meaning whenever you cancel you have to pay out the remaining time left of the current 30 day period. Not that big of a deal but good info for those who are fine print readers like I am!
JP says
When you think of security company… The times you need them most are in the middle of the night! When we tribes back from a trip, we only got a tech on the phone who told us that we could get into our house and that he would notify the police not to come to the house, but that the alarm would continue to be activated until support arrived the next morning!! Spent 1.5 hours outside of our house before we were able to get in!! ABSOLUTE JOKE OF A SECURITY COMPANY!!! Do not do business with them… Their customer service is rude and they are unwilling to correct wrongs when they make mistakes!!
Greg says
While comparing prices between Protect America and ADT, I noticed installation and activation is free for Protect America but ADT cost $99 for installation. The highest monitoring fee for ADT is $47.99/mo.,while Protect America offers 15 door/window sensors + 1 motion sensor for $42.99/mo. A strong track record matters but Protect America still boast of the fastest response time to any alarm trigger. I think my choice is made.
Damon says
The response time can be the game changer in stopping a crime or apprehending the culprit. Protect America still has the fastest response time according to reviews and my personal experience. There is no reason not to recommend.
Aubrey says
I kept swinging back and forth between DIY installation and just letting the security company handle it, but the knowledge that I could just pay somebody qualified to install it and STILL save money had frankly never occurred to me.
I’ll give this more consideration, but this is the most appealing service I’ve read about this far.
Quinton M says
I got Protect America and recommend getting a second touch screen panel (they’ll give you one for free depending what package you got) and put that in the kitchen/living room area. And then put the control panel which isn’t as visually appealing in a closet somewhere, then control the system with a smartphone or key fob.
Mariel Bryant says
The flexibility of their packages and the no activation/upfront fee sets them apart from others in the field. Thanks for this elaborate review, cleared up my doubts.
Lisa Helmsy says
I came over from ADT to Protect America. One of the biggest reasons was because in spite me never upgrading my services, every 6 months my bill was going up. I ended up looking through everything and I was paying 30% more than I did when I first got my system. Protect America worked with my budget and assured me this won’t happen with then.
Chris D. says
Is it possible to sell your existing contract with Protect America to another user?
Alarm Reviews says
Good question Chris. I would call them at 888-936-2878 and see if they’ll do that. They will move to a new location with you anywhere in USA for no cost so they will probably stick to that as it could get confusing to ‘buy and sell’ existing home security contracts.
Rene Jacobs says
I feel like the basic option here was just too basic but when I called in I was surprised by what they can do. They have great services but if you want a solid security system, get one of the pricier packages with them is my 2 cents.
Morgan Eckhart says
No doubt, Protect America is a force to reckon with when it comes to home security systems. The freeze and flood sensors option is what sets this apart from other companies. I’m surprised that some companies don’t have this option. After the flash floods in Houston, we really needed something that would alert us about the level of water so we can act before it’s too late. Really helpful during emergencies.
Yasha says
Copper. $19.99/Month. Landline only. Best price out there but not too practical, we only have cellphones.
Bronze. $35.99/Month. 7 Sensors + 1 Motion. Standard cellular package.
But I do not need 7 sensors. I only have 3 outside doors. I only need motion sensors and no need for door/window sensors.
Doesn’t seem too flexible!
Alarm Reviews says
Hey Yasha,
Once you call them at 888-936-2878 they can customize those sensors that come with it. 7 Sensors doesn’t neccessarily mean only door/window sensors. Let them know what you need and they will work with you to custom tailor a security system to your home. The plans they have do appear as a ‘one size fits all’ packaging tier but it is much different when you call into Protect America and hear what they can do for you. Thanks for the feedback.
Anita May says
I just called and switched the 15 door and window sensors to 4 motions and an indoor camera for the same monthly price of $41.99. Can’t wait to see the equipment. FYI I worked for PA fifteen years ago and I loved it – what a fun and progressive group!
Nancy says
I have to say that Protect America was the very best decision I made a couple of years ago. I saw it at my brother’s house and then installed it at my house. It gives you a lifetime replacement for their equipment pieces.
Robert says
Great prices, but is that for a reason? Sometimes when the prices are low the quality is, too. Is that the case here? Great inspection report done.
Alarm Reviews says
Hey Robert. Fortunately not the case here for Protect America. They use wireless GE equipment which all comes with 5-7 year battery life with backup batteries in each component. They have touchscreen panels and everything else you read about in the equipment section on this page. It is something to be on the lookout for with other companies but thankfully a better price doesn’t equal cheaper equipment here.
Joseph Hills says
You are absolutely right. Better price doesn’t necessarily equal cheaper equipment. My friend used them last month, and I can tell you their service is fantastic.
Meredith says
The rep made some promises that I had to remind them of after getting the first bill. After that confusion got fixed I was happy with them again, luckily there was notes on my account regarding what he had told me. The app is easy to control the alarm system with and I got it installed really fast. Sure beats the $600 I would’ve paid at Simplisafe had I signed up.
Patrick G. says
Yes, it’s a DIY. They are sticking me with some false alarm fees from the police due to their door sensor failing and tripping the alarm. I suppose I need to order new ones or throw some glue on the back of them.
Alarm Reviews says
Hey Patrick,
That sounds frustrating! When we did a test install with Protect America they were velcro attachments (not sticky). No issues on over 4 years here. Sounds like you maybe didn’t put it high enough on the door or in a location that people can bump into? At the top right is where we have found the best place to put these wireless door sensors.
Heather says
Let me tell ya, some of these features I would never expect from an alarm company. I love the access I get on my phone, camera’s are easy to control. Customer service calls within seconds of the alarm sounding off and I got a spare touchscreen panel for my room. I was able to cover 8 windows, a motion, 2 cameras and 4 doors for under $50 a month and with any other company that would have been $60+/month. I paid a little extra out of pocket for the cameras but they will cut you a good deal.
Clarissa says
Heather,
Thanks for including the price, happy to see that it’s right in my price range! I’m glad to hear about all the extra features, and that you were able to cover a lot for what you are paying. Definetly worth me checking into more.
Rachel says
Just got this Protect America system installed in my house after going through your detailed review. I’m highly impressed with the initial impressions of them. At each stage, they were highly courteous and took great pains in answering each of my queries. The technicians were thoroughly professional in installing the hardware in my apartment and taught me how to operate and take care of all the things in the nicest possible manner.
Thomas says
That is great to hear someone has a good experience. I got stuck with a jerk from Xfinity security. He came in my house, down talked me in so many words, treated me like I knew nothing, and I caught him pushing my dog. I report the incident soon as her left and my money was refunded and contract was taken off. He basically hit my dog which made me angry. Anyways after that, I saw this review on Protect America and set it up myself. Very easy and I’m really happy and impressed with it!
Maddie says
Lots of great information! They are definitely one of the more affordable option and they have what I need for the town home I live in. It seems most companies use GE and Protect America has some different sensors that no other companies had to offer. You end up ‘leasing’ the equipment with these guys that’s how you get it for so cheap but after the 3 year agreement is up it’s yours to keep! Same thing other companies do but you don’t have to pay an upfront fee with PA.

I really enjoy a company that knows their business. Their customer service is top-noch and I feel as if I’m treated like family. I chose to use this company because of the free installation and it was so simple! I got it up and working in a half hour with the helpful assistant on the phone. I would use them again.
Patrick Ambers says
I know it is probably redundant to say this but I have enjoyed my time with them thus far. I was with a different company for years and they upped the prices too much for me. I was paying nearly double what I do now for less. I feel this company is better suited to be budget friendly and they gave me the option to increase or decrease my package at anytime. Can’t beat that!
Herbert Auger says
Protect America was recommended by my neighbor since he got them so I tried to get it as well. I’ve had them for eight months now and they are much better than my previous home security provider. Protect America offered technologies and sensors that I could not get through my previous provider without paying a fortune. They’re also a lot more competitive and they offered a bunch of different sensors and options that made it much more attractive to me. In fact, they gave me a flood sensor for my basement in case I get water and that’s good to know because we have flooding in our area occasionally. Moreover, installing it was incredibly easy and the whole thing took half an hour. The hardest part was figuring out where to put the sensors but other than that, it was very straightforward. In addition, I use their mobile app occasionally to set the alarm if my wife forgets or we forget when we’re out. I use it to disarm as well.
Robert Cortes says
I am blown away, this was truly awesome. I got what I wanted without spending more than I thought. And it was done so quickly without any fuss. My jaw is just hitting the floor at how easy this was. Thank you so much.
Alarm Reviews says
Ha thanks for the jaw dropping details Robert! Best of luck with Protect America in the future and thanks for the input on our review.

treated me as a valued customer ! ordering thru the live chat was easy and your customer service was excellent ! we have used protect america for many years and will continue to use them for many more years to come !!!
Jimmy says
I have been using them for about 6 months and have had no issues. I’m not convinced I have the top of the line security equipment but for an average person like me, it is everything you need and more. I can’t say enough positive things abut their customer service either. A+++
James Strange says
Great insight. I was expecting a catch when I called them but ended up with a good rate with enough equipment to cover my house for around $40 a month. That includes control from my phone and other home automation features I wasn’t expecting.
Dan White says
I couldn’t help by drop a comment here as I recently started using this company. I ended up installing it myself to save money but half way through I got a little confused, gave them a call and had it done 15 minutes later. Easy-peasy!
Jax says
I was going to ask about this. How long did it take you to install? I have no experience with anything like this so I don’t want to be in over my head. I am trying to save money but I need a security system. Out area has had a lot of crime in the last few years that is growing. Does anyone know how long/easy it is to install?
Alarm Reviews says
Hey Jax.,
We tested and currently have this security system in our office. It took us 30 minutes to install, it comes in a box with everything presetup and then you call and activate the system. There wasn’t anything too tricky, just apply the sensors to where they belong. If you don’t consider yourself an expert on where they belong you can always pay them to send out a tech or have them walk you through it on your phone. If you still aren’t comfortable then go with ADT who will install the system for you!

Protect America also gives great tips on their blog I follow. The use good infographics and seem to really care about creating and protecting communities. I am joining them to be apart of their brand and mission. They have a fun vibe about them as well and their sales rep was understanding of my situation and what I needed to protect the condo I currently live in.
Mary Rose Joyner says
It was an absolute pleasure chatting with customer service. They went through the Broadband description and I am very interested in purchasing it.. Customer rep was professional and patient as I sort through setting off my alarm and she checked the zones that were activated. Thank you for great customer care. I will be purchasing the broadband… Support was a big help, friendly and answered my questions on everything I asked about.

Holy moly. Those are some numbers. I have got a fair bit of idea about different security companies since I have read a lot of reviews on your awesome site and really, I haven’t seen other companies offering so many of those sensors and other gadgets in their packages. Actually, I was in need of a better home security system since my present one is laughable. And as you’re saying, their customer service and all is also great. So, shall I marry Protect America or not? 😉
Gale says
My wife and I have been with them for 2 years now and compared to the last company, they are out of this world. They not only are willing to work with you but always offer new and updated equipment. Not to mention their customer service is outstanding. I never once had an issue when needing to speak with a rep. I’d marry them myself but the wife may get jealous.

Good experience, Protect America was very
thorough. Appreciate all of their help with
updating my billing and with the system

I like Protect America. It’s wireless control is
awesome! Customer support is great!

My customer service rep was extremely polite and quickly accommodated my request! You guys are doing great with customer service and I’ve only had you for less than three weeks. Keep up the good work.

Set up was fast and easy, with the support of the tech support. They made it a breeze, and they were so helpful to answer all questions clear and precise. A great package and friendly fast help. If I new it was going to be this easy and reasonably priced I would have done it years ago.
Leno N says
It was an easy experience chatting with Protect America and setting up their security system. It came with enough stickers for windows and back door as well as the sign outside. We have set off the alarm accidentally twice already and they called right away which is assuring to know.
Brando says
As everyone was heaping praises on how solid their customer care, equipment and overall quality of service is, I called them to send a representative to my house so that we can chalk out the details and also get recommendations on which plan to go with. To my utter surprise their man rang the door-bell within hours of my calling them and explained everything to me. I was completely sold on seeing the professionalism of Protect America in each and every area. And so I finally went with them and it’s 3 months since I got their system and I couldn’t be happier.
Dave says
Was shuffling between reviews of different home security companies on your site as I will immediately require one when I shift to my new residence. I’m still analyzing the pros and cons of different service providers, though the probability of my going with Protect America increased a lot after reading this very helpful and comprehensive review. Their plans, BBB rating, equipment and their reviews seems to suggest it will be a decent option within my budget.
Dominick says
Protect America protects my home and business right now and I couldn’t have asked for more. At both places, I did the job of installation myself, thereby saving quite a few bucks. It looked difficult on the outside but it was made easy because of their helpful online tutorials. I faced one little problem and I’m sure I won’t again after experiencing their quality service in each and every area.
Sam says
A great review with some great information. Thanks for taking the time to post.
Brixton says
Wow, this company really appeals to me. The DIY installation is no problem, since my hubby is a handy man with a capital HANDY. Still, if even Grandma could do it, maybe I could give it a go. I’m intrigued by the GPS system and can’t quite wrap my mind around that yet. Still, with all the great features and the lower cost, this might be the one to sign on with, especially since we move quite a bit and they don’t charge a moving fee. Something to think about. Thanks for bringing them to our attention!
Gail Grover says
The main reason I went with them is because I was able to install the system myself, and it only took me an hour to do so. I didn’t want to pay another company $200+ to come out, go through my house, make a mess… I can do this all myself. I am glad I went with them. Not only was I able to do it myself, but when I did run into a minor problem, I called them, they walked me through it, and I really loved that.
Eric says
That was my main reason as well, Gail Grover. I believed Alarm-reviews.net when they recommended me to go with the DIY way rather than getting the installation done through their technician. To be honest, I was a little worried in the beginning as to how will I do it considering I’m not that savvy with technical things, but with the help of some video tutorials on their site, I could complete the job within a few hours. Now, that’s a statement there. If I can do it, then any one in the world can. This review and the guys at Alarm-reviews.net really helped me a lot in choosing Protect America and making the job of installation easier. Thank you for that.
Alarm Reviews says
Thanks for the good words Eric and glad all went well for you!
Jason Clark says
I’m a complete DIY guy and loves to do everything by myself. So it was but natural for me to go with self installation of all the equipments when I went with Protect America some two years back. My advice to everyone would be to go for the self installation route rather than getting a technician do it for you. It is far easier than it looks and with the help of all the tutorials out there, it becomes a kid’s job. After all, we get quite a savings this way. And before I forget it, these guys are awesome. Great overall service. Recommended!
Joe Thomas says
We have been using protect america for 2 years now and have been pleased with the price and the service. I do not hesitate to recommend this to my friends and family.
Andrew says
Protect America’s colors and logo have changed over the years but they are still the quickest to call you when an alarm trips. Although I’ve never had a REAL reason for the alarm to go off other than we forget to turn it off before we go outside, they call within 30 seconds and I’m glad to know I can count on them when I’m at work.
Justin says
Entirely agreed. I too haven’t had, till now, a real reason for the alarm to go off and I hope that day never comes, other than some accidental and deliberate attempts done from our side to check their response time. At each time, their response time was just phenomenal. Their customer care in all the areas is the best I have seen from any company of any nature I have dealt with in the past.
Marko says
I saw one of this system at my friend’s home and I am very much impressed from it. For my home, I am confused about which packge to choose. I am thinking between silver and gold. I think gold is the best option for every home.
Alarm Reviews says
Hey Marko,
Good choice. Each tiered package with Protect America contains more equipment than the previous. So count up how many doors and windows you have and that can give you a good estimate. You can also get camera’s etc. With most other companies you pay more up front for equipment (up to $500+) with these guys you pay more per month (a couple bucks).
Gilbert says
I agree. I applied for the gold package and it more than covered my entire house which, although not a mansion or palace, is a decently big enough house. The gold package hits right at the sweet spot. Now, I control everything in my house through my Android phone via their nifty app. Life’s been good.
Brett Hogan says
I never looked back 10 years ago when we went with this company for our home security. Thanks!
Jorge M. says
I like DIY installation. There is so much information on the internet, there is no way that you would not be able to get everything hooked up the right way. I always wanted a home security system and this company is one that makes it very reasonable to own. It is no Ikea project that takes 2 hours with a thousand bolts and screws that’s for sure. All you end up doing is remove the film and stick it to the door. I guess you don’t even have to do it yourself anymore anyways.
Alarm Reviews says
Your right Jorge., Plenty of tutorials provided and we here at Alarm Reviews installed Protect America’s exact system in under 30 minutes. I think the word ‘Install’ con-notates some advanced use involved but it’s not. Regardless, as you said as of 2015 you can have them send out a tech if you aren’t comfortable.
Johnny K. says
I personally like to go with a company that has plenty of experience. This company has been doing security for more than 20 years and that is enough for me to consider them as a final choice in home security. The overall costs are not bad either 🙂
Zoey says
I agree with you there, Johnny. Like in any business, players in security business too come regularly, but most of them vanish in thin air within few years. That’s why sticking to companies which are at least a decade old in the business of security systems should be preferred. In the case of Protect America, they are doing their thing from more than 2 decades now, which is great and says a lot about how good they are.
Jeff R. says
I am a DIY’r through and through so that type of installation is right up my alley. I like to tinker with things like this so even if it were professionally installed, I would want to get into it and see the inner workings of the entire system. Plenty of experience here for the company and the prices are very good.
Kevin says
Same here dude. DIY is in my genes, my jeans, my shirts and don’t know where else 🙂
My friend at first spooked me that DIY won’t be easy in case of installing security stuff in the house and recommended me to get some technician to get the installation done. But after talking to Protect America’s customer care and giving a cursory glance over their tutorial videos, I was able to finish the job myself within an hour. It’s far easier than it looks!
Trevin J. says
I have to admit, Do It Yourself installation scares me a bit. Does anyone know if Protect America offers additional support for troubleshooting?
Alarm Reviews says
Hey Trevin.,
If DIY scares you then just pay one of their techs to come out! This started in 2014, you can either save $99 and do it yourself (Very easy we have, it’s just sticking it to the wall) but if you want to make sure you get it right hire them instead.
Ryder D. says
I think it’s great that you can bypass the company installation and just do it yourself for free. But they should offer an option to pay the company to perform the installation for those who may not be able to do it themselves.
Alarm Reviews says
Hey Ryder,
They did implement that service as of early last year (2014). It is now up to you although they will still ship the equipment to you at which point you can do it yourself or have the technician they schedule (for a fee) install it.
Braxton Davies says
Upfront costs not being an issue give so many people the chance to get their home protecting without going into the red. What I did and do love about this company is that they allow you to install it instead of paying someone a few hundred to do it. Because I live alone, while this was a great perk, I had to pass. I need a man around for this stuff. I haven’t read many negative things at all. The A- is well deserved.
Hannah Newberry says
I love that you can get car GPS too with this! I always worry about my car being stolen, so this looks like a really great option for me! And it’s so cheap too. This looks just perfect. I also love how they have partnered with charities. This company looks awesome!
Randall K. says
This is a truly legit and solid service. I will admit that I wasn’t feeling having to do the installation myself. Yet seeing that it’s not extremely difficult and pretty much the only con, it’s not that big of a deal to me anymore. It’s at least worth investing the time to see what they can offer, in comparison to the competition. Great review!
Robert says
I am impressed with this company. I don’t mind putting things together if it means getting discounts this deep. And working with my iPhone and knowing my family is going to be safe and sound. I think you’ve sold me on this security company.
Jackson Messner says
I have not had any issues with the DIY installation either. I, personally like to do it myself so I know how the thing works inside and out.
Amy Pert says
I really love when a company gives their users choices rather than give them one basic unit. This sounds like a very promising home security system, with fair pricing indeed. So far it’s the one with the best pricing structure too, well for me at least, so thanks for sharing this review!
Hannah K says
The option to take it along with me whenever I move is very appealing. I’m job hunting right now and that might well take me to a different town or even a different state, so it’s good to know that I could be protected here and at my new place no matter when I move.
Adrian says
I’m on the same boat. The place I live right now has zero security and was planning on investing in a reliable system but I plan on moving to Chicago so it’s great that I can take it with me when I leave. Heard only positive reviews about these guys and from what I can read here it seems I’ll be giving them a call these days.
Dedrick says
Protect America’s equipment is older GE stuff but you get a lot of it per package. You essentially lease the equipment and that’s how you get a free security system (like all other companies) but with them you get 4-6 more sensors than any other company. I didn’t know they offered installation for you now but I know they still focus on installing it yourself.
Shawn says
I was going to ask this so I am glad someone pointed it out. I am new to these systems and from what I read they seem to have the most bang per buck. I have quite a large home and family and am excited to have finally made the decision to purchase!
Karen says
Love the fact that there are no upfront costs. I was unsure about going with Protect America due to several reasons, but I really liked what they had to offer. I truly feel protected having them in my home. They do call right away if there’s an issue, which is a huge plus. The self installation was a bit of a hassle, but I knew about it going in so it wasn’t that big of a deal. I have the iPhone and installed the app, and it works like a charm. Very happy I decided to go with this company over the rest.
James R. says
I always get called right away from protect america that’s for sure! Sometimes they call me before I even turn off my password only to find out on the phone I turned it off on time haha. The phone app works great (on iPhone at least), I hope they come out with a smart thermostat for the home automation part but installing it myself was much easier than I expected it to be. I’m a cheap A though so that $99 we saved was nice, I guess they offer a install for you now if you don’t dare to try ha.
