15 Excuses for Not Getting Home Security — Exposed With FBI Data, Real Break-In Costs & What a System Actually Costs in 2026 (Spoiler: Less Than Netflix)

After reviewing dozens of home security systems and talking to thousands of homeowners, we’ve heard every excuse imaginable. Some were valid in 2010. None hold up in 2026.

Modern DIY systems have eliminated every barrier — cost, complexity, contracts, and commitment. Here are the 15 most common excuses, why they’re wrong, and what the reality actually looks like.

The 15 Excuses — At a Glance

#ExcuseReality (2026)Cost to Fix
1“I can’t afford it”Complete systems from $199, monitoring from $0/mo$199 one-time
2“I live in a safe neighborhood”65% of burglaries happen in suburban/rural areas—
3“I have a dog”Dogs sleep 12-14 hours/day, can be bribed—
4“I have a gun”Guns don’t prevent break-ins when you’re not home—
5“I rent”Wireless systems move with you, no drilling$199+
6“Too complicated to install”DIY systems install in 15-30 minutes, peel-and-stick—
7“Contracts scare me”Top DIY brands have zero contracts—
8“I’ll just get a camera”Cameras record crimes, they don’t prevent them—
9“Nothing worth stealing”Avg burglary loss: $2,661. Plus emotional trauma—
10“Insurance will cover it”Deductibles, rate hikes, and irreplaceable items—
11“I’m always home”28% of burglaries happen while someone is home—
12“Fake signs are enough”Experienced burglars spot fakes in seconds—
13“Police won’t respond anyway”Video verification gets priority response—
14“Too much maintenance”Modern wireless sensors last 3-5 years on batteries—
15“I’ll get around to it”80% of burglary victims say they meant to get a system—

1. “I Can’t Afford It”

This was the #1 valid excuse — in 2010. Back then, security meant $1,500 upfront, $50/month, and a 3-year contract. In 2026, that world is gone.

SystemUpfront CostMonthly FeeContract3-Year Total
Abode$199$0 (free self-monitor)None$199
Ring Alarm$199$0-$20/moNone$199-$919
SimpliSafe$199-$509$0-$28/moNone$199-$1,517
ADT (traditional)$0-$400$29-$60/mo36 months$1,044-$2,560

Abode’s Smart Security Kit costs $199 — less than a single AirPods Pro. Self-monitoring is free. Professional monitoring starts at $6/month. That’s less than one streaming subscription.

The math: The average burglary costs $2,661 in stolen property alone — before counting door/window damage ($500-$2,000), insurance deductible ($500-$1,000), rate increases ($200-$500/year), and emotional trauma. A $199 system pays for itself 13x over in prevented loss.

2. “I Live in a Safe Neighborhood”

Burglars specifically target “safe” neighborhoods. Why? More valuable items, less vigilance, and homeowners with a false sense of security. FBI data shows:

  • 65% of burglaries occur in suburban and rural areas — not “bad” neighborhoods
  • Affluent neighborhoods have higher average losses per burglary
  • Criminals drive 15-20 minutes from their home area to burglarize, specifically choosing neighborhoods unlike their own

“Safe neighborhood” means low crime so far. One meth epidemic, one economic downturn, or one organized theft ring changes that overnight. Check your actual crime data — you might be surprised.

3. “I Have a Dog”

Dogs are great. Dogs are also:

  • Asleep 12-14 hours per day
  • Bribable with a piece of steak or treats
  • Unable to call the police
  • Not home when you take them to the vet, park, or groomer
  • Potentially harmed by determined intruders

A barking dog is a deterrent — it makes some burglars choose the next house. But it’s not a security system. The best approach? Dog + security system. Your dog alerts; your system calls the police.

Pro tip: Modern security systems have pet-immune motion sensors that ignore animals under 40-80 lbs, so your dog won’t trigger false alarms.

4. “I Have a Gun”

A gun is a last-resort self-defense tool. It is not a security system. Consider:

  • Guns don’t work when you’re not home (70% of burglaries happen while you’re away)
  • Guns are the #1 most stolen item in burglaries — criminals specifically look for them
  • Guns don’t alert police, detect smoke, monitor water leaks, or lock your doors
  • Guns require you to be awake, alert, and in the right room

A security system prevents the confrontation entirely. Sirens, lights, and monitoring dispatch police before you ever need to reach for anything. Prevention beats reaction every time.

5. “I Rent — I Can’t Install Anything”

This excuse died around 2018. Modern DIY systems are 100% renter-friendly:

  • Peel-and-stick sensors — no drilling, no screws, no damage
  • Wireless everything — hub plugs into an outlet, sensors use adhesive
  • Take it with you — the entire system moves when your lease ends
  • No landlord permission needed for wireless, non-permanent devices

Our renter’s guide covers the best systems specifically for apartments and rentals. Abode is our #1 pick for renters — wireless, no contracts, and everything peels off cleanly with dental floss and rubbing alcohol.

6. “It’s Too Complicated to Install”

If you can download an app and peel a sticker, you can install a modern security system. Seriously.

SystemInstall TimeTools NeededDifficulty
Abode15-20 minutesNone (peel-and-stick)Easy
Ring15-30 minutesNone (peel-and-stick)Easy
SimpliSafe20-30 minutesNone (peel-and-stick)Easy
ADT Pro Install2-4 hours (technician)ProfessionalN/A

DIY doesn’t mean you’re wiring a panel in the basement. It means: 1) plug in hub, 2) download app, 3) peel backing off sensor, 4) stick on door/window. Done. Most people finish in under 30 minutes including the unboxing.

7. “I Don’t Want to Be Locked Into a Contract”

Neither do we. That’s why the top 3 DIY systems — Abode, Ring, and SimpliSafe — have zero contracts. Cancel anytime. No early termination fees.

Contracts are an old-school tactic from companies like ADT, Vivint, and Brinks that subsidize equipment with 36-60 month commitments. If you’re stuck in one, here’s how to get out.

In 2026, the only reason to sign a contract is if someone knocks on your door and pressures you into one. (Don’t fall for that either.)

8. “I’ll Just Get a Camera”

Cameras are useful. But a camera without a security system is a witness, not a bodyguard.

FeatureCamera OnlySecurity System
Records break-in footageYesYes
Sounds a loud sirenNoYes (95-105 dB)
Calls the policeNoYes (with monitoring)
Detects door/window openingNoYes (contact sensors)
Interior motion detectionLimitedYes (dedicated PIR sensors)
Smoke/CO/water detectionNoYes
Auto-arm when you leaveNoYes (geofencing)
Insurance discountNoYes (5-20%)

A camera shows you your stuff getting stolen. A security system stops it from happening. The best approach: cameras as part of a complete system. Our camera guide covers how to combine them.

9. “I Don’t Have Anything Worth Stealing”

Really? Let’s check:

  • Laptop: $500-$2,000+
  • Phone/tablet: $300-$1,500
  • TV: $300-$2,000
  • Jewelry: Often irreplaceable sentimental value
  • Medications: A top target for drug-related burglaries
  • Identity documents: Passport, Social Security card = identity theft
  • Cash/cards: Whatever’s in your wallet drawer

The average burglary loss is $2,661 (FBI UCR data). But the real cost includes door/window repairs, time off work, insurance deductibles, and emotional trauma — often totaling $5,000-$15,000.

Also: burglars don’t know what you have until they’re inside. They’re coming regardless.

10. “Insurance Will Cover It”

Insurance helps, but it doesn’t make you whole:

  • Deductible: $500-$2,000 out of pocket before coverage kicks in
  • Depreciation: Insurance pays replacement cost minus wear — your 3-year-old laptop gets valued at 50%
  • Rate increases: Filing a burglary claim raises your premiums 10-20% for 3-5 years
  • Exclusions: Cash, collectibles, and items over certain limits need separate riders
  • Irreplaceables: Insurance can’t replace family photos, heirlooms, or your sense of safety

Plot twist: A monitored security system actually lowers your insurance premiums 5-20% ($100-$500/year). The system can literally pay for itself through insurance savings alone.

11. “I’m Always Home”

Two problems with this:

  1. You’re not always home. Work, groceries, school pickup, vacation, medical appointments — everyone leaves.
  2. 28% of burglaries happen with someone home (DOJ data). These are the dangerous ones — “hot burglaries” that can escalate to assault, robbery, or worse.

A security system protects you while you’re home too. Door sensors alert you to unexpected entry. Glass break sensors detect window attacks. The siren alone is enough to send most intruders running. And if someone breaks in while you’re home, monitored dispatch gets police there faster.

12. “Fake Security Signs Are Enough”

Fake signs deter casual, opportunistic thieves — the teenager who tries a random door handle. They do not deter anyone who knows what they’re doing.

Experienced burglars spot fake signs by checking for:

  • No visible sensors on doors/windows
  • No keypad visible through the window
  • Generic or outdated company names
  • No monitoring sticker on the control panel
  • Faded, weathered signs (real companies replace them)

A real sign backed by a real system is the deterrent. A fake sign with no system is a bluff that experienced criminals call regularly.

13. “Police Won’t Respond Fast Enough Anyway”

Average police response time is 7-10 minutes. Average burglary takes 8-12 minutes. It’s close — and getting better:

  • Video verification gets priority dispatch (police respond faster to confirmed break-ins vs unverified alarms)
  • Cellular monitoring means instant signal — no waiting for phone lines
  • The siren alone sends most burglars running in under 60 seconds — before police even need to arrive

The goal isn’t necessarily catching the burglar. It’s interrupting the burglary. A 105 dB siren + flashing lights + police dispatch means the intruder grabs nothing and runs. Two-way voice monitoring takes it further — the monitoring center can shout through your panel speaker, making the intruder think someone is watching live.

14. “Too Much Maintenance and False Alarms”

Modern systems are essentially maintenance-free:

  • Sensor batteries: Last 3-5 years; the app alerts you weeks before they die
  • Updates: Automatic over Wi-Fi
  • False alarms: AI detection, entry delays, and app notifications let you cancel before dispatch
  • Geofencing: Auto-arms when you leave, auto-disarms when you arrive — no forgetting

The biggest “maintenance” task is replacing a sensor battery every few years. That takes 30 seconds.

15. “I’ll Get Around to It Eventually”

This is the most dangerous excuse because it feels reasonable. You’re not saying no — you’re saying “later.”

But burglars don’t wait for “later.” And 80% of burglary victims report they had been meaning to get a security system. The break-in was the push they finally needed — after losing thousands in property and peace of mind.

If you’ve read this far, you’ve already spent more time thinking about it than it takes to install one. Abode’s Smart Security Kit ships in 2 days and installs in 15 minutes. No contract, no monthly fee required.

The Real Cost of Waiting

ScenarioCost
Abode Smart Security Kit (one-time)$199
Average burglary property loss$2,661
Door/window repair after break-in$500-$2,000
Insurance deductible$500-$1,000
Insurance rate increase (3-5 years)$600-$2,500
Time off work for police report, repairs, insurance$200-$1,000
Emotional/psychological impactPriceless
Total burglary cost$4,500-$9,000+

A $199 system prevents a $4,500+ problem. That’s a 22x return on investment.

All three install in under 30 minutes, require no tools, have no contracts, and offer free self-monitoring. There are literally no excuses left.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the absolute cheapest way to get home security?

Abode Smart Security Kit at $199 with free self-monitoring. That’s a hub, key fob, door sensor, and motion sensor — everything you need to start. Add sensors over time as budget allows. More no-monthly-fee options here.

Do security systems actually prevent burglaries?

Yes. Homes without security systems are 300% more likely to be burglarized (FBI/UNC Charlotte study). Visible security is the #1 deterrent cited by convicted burglars. The combination of signs, sensors, sirens, and monitoring makes your home a hard target — and burglars consistently choose easier ones.

What if I have pets?

Modern motion sensors have pet immunity up to 40-80 lbs. Abode’s motion sensor ignores pets under 50 lbs. You can also use door/window sensors and glass break sensors that aren’t triggered by pet movement at all.

What’s the difference between self-monitoring and professional monitoring?

Self-monitoring sends alerts to your phone — you decide whether to call police. Professional monitoring has a 24/7 center that dispatches police, fire, and EMS automatically. Self-monitoring is free; professional monitoring costs $6-$28/month depending on the system and features.

Can burglars disable a security system?

Modern systems use cellular backup (not just Wi-Fi), crash and smash protection (alerts sent before the panel can be destroyed), and encrypted signals. Disabling a modern security system requires knowledge and time that most burglars don’t have — especially with a 105 dB siren screaming.

I’m still not sure — what should I do?

Read our complete buyer’s guide for a step-by-step framework. Or just start with Abode’s $199 kit — it’s risk-free (no contract), and you can return it within 30 days if it’s not for you. Most people wonder why they waited so long.

Definitely wouldn’t buy a gun as I am against them but my little dog provides ample security for our needs. We don’t live in a rowdy neighborhood so feel quite safe. We are in the Northern VA area and but have many neighbors who do have security systems just as a security blanket…. doesn’t hurt!

Ha these crack me up! I fall into quite a few of the categories. Suppose we as humans always have an excuse not to buy something we don’t fully NEED. I would guess the ‘I got a dog’ is the most dominate one out there.

I don’t require the need to purchase a home security system because right now I am living in an apartment complex. And, have you ever heard of an apartment robbery? Very unlikely of happening in my mind because we have a 24/7 hour concierge and the apartment complex is locked at all times.

I’m a big fan of #13. Having a sign is a cheap deterrant to buying a home security system and I would say it works! Unless they robbers really want something your house then they would steer clear of a house that bears significant risks such as a security system. Such a great idea.

Alarm systems are a great way to have peace of mind even if you do not live in a ‘shady’ neighborhood. Coming from a family that budgets strictly each month, I have not incorporated a home security system into my monthly expenses. I do not think it is necessary, because the crime rate in my home is low. I have insurance for my valuables, but my safety is another thing. It’s something I’m still on the fence about, however, websites like yours really do open my mind ot the new technological advances that new systems bring and the usefulness of them. Thanks Alarm-Reviews!

Barring a gun is a great way to protect yourself and your property, no doubt about it. However, being the owner of an alarm system that alerts you of an intruder would be a good arrangement to have to supplement your home security setup. You bring up some great points, excellent article!!

My dog is very alert and barks anytime somebody is around the premise of our house. Even if it’s at 3 am and it’s just a squirrel or cat wandering around the back door. It’s very reassuring that he’s so alert to people around our house. I really do think he is our home security system, and if it actually turns out to be an intruder, I would immediately dial 911 for help.

I actually am in a similar situation, we have two guard dogs at home and barks when somebody who is unfamiliar to them comes by our house. Although, we just experienced an incident that someone broke in our house from one side without them noticing the forced entry. Due to this, we’ve actually considered getting a home security system. It could be a bit costly, but we can’t afford another incident like what just happened to us. We did for a good while counted on our dogs for our very own version of a “home security system”, I guess there are really loopholes to everything.
