Your security system is only as good as the app that controls it. In 2026, every major home security company offers a smartphone app — but the quality varies dramatically. We tested and ranked the top security apps by reliability, features, design, and real user ratings.

1. Abode — Best Overall Security App
The Abode app stands out for combining full security system control with deep smart home integration. You can arm/disarm, view cameras, control Z-Wave and Zigbee devices, set automations, and manage Apple HomeKit scenes — all from one app.
Key features:
- Arm/disarm with one tap or geofencing (auto-arm when you leave)
- Live camera streaming and clips
- Smart home device control (lights, locks, thermostats)
- CUE automation engine (if/then rules)
- Timeline of all events with filtering
- Multi-user support with custom permissions
- Apple Watch app
Why it’s #1: No other security app offers this level of smart home control. Abode supports HomeKit, Alexa, Google, Z-Wave, and Zigbee — meaning you control your entire home from one place, not just your security system.
Monitoring: Works with free self-monitoring or paid professional monitoring ($6-20/month). Push notifications for every sensor event regardless of plan.
2. Ring — Best Camera App
The Ring app excels at camera management. If you have multiple Ring cameras, the app makes it easy to view all feeds, review motion events, and share clips. The Neighbors feature adds community crime alerts.
Key features:
- Multi-camera live view dashboard
- Motion event timeline with smart alerts
- Neighbors community crime feed
- Alarm arm/disarm
- Two-way audio through cameras
- Linked Devices for shared camera access
- Alexa integration (routines from app)
Why it’s #2: Best camera experience in any security app. The Neighbors feature is genuinely useful for local crime awareness. Loses points for limited smart home control outside the Amazon ecosystem.
3. SimpliSafe — Most User-Friendly
The SimpliSafe app wins on simplicity. It does exactly what you need — arm, disarm, check sensors, view cameras — with zero learning curve. The highest app store ratings of any security company.
Key features:
- One-tap arm/disarm
- Sensor status dashboard
- Camera live view and clips
- Live Guard video verification
- Secret alerts (silent notifications for specific sensors)
- Duress PIN support
Why it’s #3: Highest rated on both app stores. Does the basics perfectly. Limited by SimpliSafe’s closed ecosystem — no third-party smart home control.
4. Alarm.com — Most Widely Used
Alarm.com isn’t a security company — it’s the platform behind hundreds of providers including Brinks Home, dealer-installed systems, and legacy ADT panels. If your provider uses Alarm.com, this is your app.
Key features:
- Full system control (arm/disarm, sensors, cameras)
- Geo-services (auto-arm/disarm)
- Smart home scenes and automation
- Video analytics (person detection, package detection)
- Energy management integration
Why it’s #4: Capable and feature-rich, but your experience depends entirely on which features your provider enables. Some providers restrict Alarm.com features to upsell premium plans.
5. ADT+ — ADT’s New App
ADT+ replaced the aging ADT Pulse app in 2024. It’s a significant improvement, but still catching up to competitors. Read about the Pulse → ADT+ transition.
Key features:
- Arm/disarm with gestures
- Camera feeds and clips
- Smart home control (limited)
- Professional monitoring status
- Emergency SOS button
Why it’s #5: Improved from Pulse, but still the lowest-rated major security app. Users report occasional connection issues and slow camera loading.
6. Vivint — Best-Looking App
The Vivint app has the best visual design of any security app — it looks and feels premium. AI camera features like smart clips and person detection are well-integrated.
Key features:
- AI-curated smart clips
- Full smart home control (locks, thermostat, lights, garage)
- Custom automation scenes
- Camera live view with person detection
- Guest access management
Why it’s #6: Beautiful app, but only available to Vivint customers ($55-85/month). No self-monitoring option. The closed ecosystem limits its appeal.
Free Security Apps Worth Having
These standalone apps add security features without requiring a full security system:
- Ring Neighbors (Free) — Community crime alerts and real-time safety feed. Works without Ring hardware.
- AlfredCamera (Free/Premium) — Turn old phones into security cameras. Good for temporary monitoring.
- Haven (Free) — Uses your phone’s sensors to detect intruders. Motion, vibration, and sound detection.
- Citizen (Free) — Real-time 911 alerts and crime mapping for your area.
What Makes a Great Security App?
When evaluating security apps, we look at:
- Reliability — Push notifications must arrive instantly. A 30-second delay defeats the purpose.
- Speed — Camera live view should load in under 3 seconds.
- Arm/Disarm — One tap, not three screens deep.
- Geofencing — Auto-arm when leaving, disarm when arriving. Reduces human error.
- Automation — If/then rules that connect security to smart home (lights on when alarm triggers).
- Multi-user — Family members need their own access with appropriate permissions.
FAQ
Which security app has the best geofencing?
Abode’s geofencing is the most reliable — it auto-arms/disarms based on all household members’ locations, not just one phone. SimpliSafe and Ring also offer geofencing but with fewer customization options.
Can I control my security system from Apple Watch?
Abode and Ring both offer Apple Watch apps. SimpliSafe does not. If you’re in the Apple ecosystem, Abode’s HomeKit integration is unmatched.
Do I need a paid plan for app access?
Most security apps are free to download and use for basic control. Camera features (cloud storage, smart alerts) typically require a paid plan. Abode offers the most functionality on their free tier.
What if my security app is slow?
Slow camera loading usually means Wi-Fi issues, not app problems. Ensure your cameras are within range of your router. If the app itself is sluggish, check for updates or reinstall.
Bottom Line: Your security app is something you’ll use daily — choose a system with an app you actually enjoy. Abode leads for smart home power users, Ring for camera-heavy setups, and SimpliSafe for pure simplicity. Read our complete buyer’s guide to find your best match.

Anything that uses alarm(dot)com as it’s backbone is a safe bet. If you want what is hip and cool definitely go for Pulse or Vivint which have their own unique app. In my experience, Vivint’s is the best at security camera recording with the ability to go back and fetch time points on the footage easily. Most others takes a long time to go back and view footage, re-capture it if needed (for authorities). Thanks for the coverage on this post, in buying a home security system this control aspect from smart devices is actually what I’m researching first. Then whoever has the best platform is whom I’m going to be using.

For me, the biggest thing for an app is a CLEAN interface that is modern and sleek. One that is also very user-friendly and easy to navigate and review footage. Pulse App is the pioneer in this currently, and I have been using the app for a few weeks no with no big complaints!

I use the ADT pulse app and love it. So nice to see what is going onside the home when gone. It is free and was easy to connect to my system. It shows me a log of everything that is going on in the home and I can add existing users for free. I want to incorporate this app to my Ring doorbell so I don’t have to use two seperate apps but happy for now.

Home security apps are the way to go if you are going to get a system. Basically everyone has a smartphone or smart device now so no reason not to control it. If your company is trying to get you to spend more than $10 more a month for this, then change providers!
