ADS Security is a regional security company based in Nashville, Tennessee — and one of the most commonly confused names in the industry (no, it’s not ADT). Founded in 1990, they’ve grown to 75,000+ customers across the Southeast, ranking among SDM’s top 25 security firms nationally.
But in 2026, with contract-free DIY systems offering the same (or better) protection at a fraction of the cost, is a regional dealer with 3-5 year contracts still worth considering? Let’s break it down.

The Problems With ADS Security
| Problem | Details | DIY Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Long contracts | 36-60 months mandatory — 75% ETF for early cancellation | Abode: No contract ever. Cancel anytime. |
| Opaque pricing | “Consultation-based” — you won’t know the cost until a sales rep visits | Abode: Prices listed on website. $0-$20/mo, all-in. |
| Professional install required | Can’t install yourself. Scheduling required. Technician in your home. | Abode/Ring/SimpliSafe: 15-30 min self-install, peel-and-stick sensors |
| Southeast only | Limited to ~8 states. Move outside the area? Pay the ETF or find a new provider. | DIY systems work nationwide — take it with you when you move |
| Equipment markup | Uses standard Alarm.com/Qolsys equipment at dealer-marked-up prices | Same Alarm.com quality via cheaper dealers or better DIY platforms |
| Auto-renewal | Contracts auto-renew for 12 months if you don’t cancel in writing 30-60 days before expiration | No-contract systems: cancel with one click, no paperwork |
ADS Security vs ADT: The Name Confusion
Let’s address the elephant in the room: ADS Security is NOT ADT. They are completely separate companies. But the similar names cause constant confusion — and ADS has arguably benefited from people searching for “ADS security” when they mean ADT.
| Feature | ADS Security | ADT |
|---|---|---|
| Founded | 1990 (Nashville) | 1874 (American District Telegraph) |
| Size | 75,000 customers | 6+ million customers |
| Coverage | Southeast US only | Nationwide |
| Installation | Professional only | Professional + Self Setup DIY |
| Monitoring | Own single center | 9 monitoring centers |
| Contracts | 36-60 months | 36 months (pro) / none (Self Setup) |
| Monthly cost | ~$35-65/mo | $6-60/mo |
| Platform | Alarm.com | ADT+ (Google Nest-based) |
If you’re comparing the two, ADT’s Self Setup option ($6/mo, no contract) is objectively a better deal than ADS for residential customers. But both pale compared to independent DIY systems — read on.
3-Year Cost Comparison
The real cost of ADS becomes clear when you calculate the full 3-year commitment:
| System | Equipment | Monthly | 3-Year Total | Contract |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ADS Security | $0-500 (financed) | $35-65 | $1,260-2,840 | 36-60 months |
| ADT Pro Install | $0-400 (financed) | $28-60 | $1,008-2,560 | 36 months |
| ADT Self Setup | $200-450 | $6-25 | $416-1,350 | None |
| Abode | $199-479 | $0-20 | $199-1,199 | None |
| Ring | $200-330 | $0-20 | $200-1,050 | None |
| SimpliSafe | $250-510 | $0-28 | $250-1,518 | None |
The math is brutal: ADS costs $1,260-$2,840 over 3 years vs $199-$1,199 for Abode. That’s up to $1,641 in savings — plus no contract, no installation appointment, and you keep your equipment.
ADS Security vs Modern DIY Systems
| Feature | ADS Security | Abode | Ring | SimpliSafe |

| Monthly cost | $35-65 | $0-20 | $0-20 | $0-28 |
| Pro monitoring | Yes (own center) | Yes (partner center) | Yes (partner center) | Yes (COPS center) |
| Cellular backup | Yes | Yes | Yes (Pro) | Yes |

When ADS Security Actually Makes Sense
| Scenario | ADS? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small business in Nashville/SE needing access control + fire + cameras | Yes | ADS excels at commercial — single vendor for complex setups |
| Homeowner who truly wants zero DIY involvement | Maybe | ADT Self Setup is easier than most DIY systems and cheaper |
| Large property needing hardwired sensors + pro design | Maybe | Pro install has advantages for complex layouts — but get 3 quotes |
| Renter or apartment dweller | No | Contract + pro install = terrible for renters |
| Anyone who might move in 3 years | No | ETF penalty + can’t take equipment |
| Budget-conscious homeowner | No | Abode does the same job for $1,000-2,000 less over 3 years |
| Smart home enthusiast | No | Alarm.com is fine but HomeKit + Matter is the future |
Already an ADS Customer? Your Options
| Situation | Best Option | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Contract expiring soon | Switch to DIY | Cancel in writing 30-60 days before renewal. Switch to Abode — save $180-540/year |
| Mid-contract, happy with service | Wait it out | Set a calendar reminder 60 days before expiration to cancel auto-renewal |
| Mid-contract, want out | Calculate ETF | Compare ETF cost vs remaining monthly payments. Sometimes paying the ETF saves money long-term |
| Auto-renewed accidentally | Negotiate | Call immediately — some reps will waive renewal if you’re persistent. File BBB complaint if needed |
| Moving out of SE region | Cancel + switch | ADS can’t serve you anyway — negotiate ETF waiver due to relocation |

The Regional Dealer Reality
ADS is one of many regional security dealers that follow the same business model: professional installation, long contracts, Alarm.com platform, and prices 2-3x higher than DIY. The names change by region — Guardian Protection in Pittsburgh, EMC Security in Georgia, Select Security in Pennsylvania, Doyle Security in Rochester — but the playbook is identical.
| What They Say | What It Means |
|---|---|
| “Free equipment” | Equipment cost rolled into higher monthly fees over 3-5 years |
| “Custom-designed system” | Standard Alarm.com kit with dealer markup |
| “Professional monitoring included” | That’s what the $35-65/month is paying for |
| “Local service” | A technician comes to your home — $100+ service call |
| “Consultation-based pricing” | They won’t show you the price until a salesperson is in your living room |
Our Verdict: 3/5
ADS Security is a legitimate, well-run regional dealer — not a scam, not a fly-by-night operation. Their Five Diamond monitoring center, 30+ year track record, and A+ BBB rating are genuine strengths. For commercial security in the Southeast, they’re a solid option.
But for residential customers in 2026, the value proposition doesn’t hold up. You’re paying $1,260-$2,840 over 3 years (locked in by contract) for the same Alarm.com-powered security that costs $199-$1,199 with no contract from Abode, Ring, or SimpliSafe.
The only residential scenario where ADS makes sense: you genuinely want someone else to handle everything (design, install, maintain) and you’re willing to pay a premium for that service. For everyone else, DIY systems deliver equal or better protection at a fraction of the cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ADS Security the same as ADT?
No. ADS Security (founded 1990, Nashville) and ADT (founded 1874, American District Telegraph) are completely separate companies with no corporate relationship. The similar names cause constant confusion, but they have different ownership, different technology platforms, and different service areas.
Does ADS Security use Alarm.com?
Yes. ADS uses Alarm.com as their smart home and monitoring platform, with Qolsys and DSC panels. This means you get the Alarm.com app (rated 4.5 stars), video integration, and smart home automation. The same platform is available from dozens of other dealers — often at lower prices.
Can I cancel my ADS Security contract early?
Yes, but expect an early termination fee (ETF) of 75-80% of your remaining contract balance. For example, if you have 24 months left at $45/month, the ETF would be approximately $810-$864. Some contracts allow penalty-free cancellation for military relocation or if you can prove a move outside their service area.
What states does ADS Security cover?
ADS primarily serves Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, and parts of surrounding states. They do not offer nationwide coverage — if you move outside their area, you’ll need to cancel your contract (potentially paying an ETF).
Is ADS Security good for apartments?
No. ADS requires professional installation (drilling, mounting, wiring) and long-term contracts — both are problems for renters. Instead, look at renter-friendly systems like Abode or Ring that use wireless, peel-and-stick sensors with no contract.
How does ADS Security compare to local competitors like Vivint or ADT?
ADS is cheaper than Vivint ($30-50/mo + financing) but more expensive than ADT Self Setup ($6-25/mo, no contract). ADS’s advantage is their own monitoring center and local technicians. But all three are significantly more expensive than DIY systems like Abode ($0-20/mo, no contract, $199 starter kit).

Growing up with Law and Order and CSI shows taught Isabelle Landau one thing: if people back then had high-quality home security systems, those series would have been way shorter. In our modern world, technology helps us keep burglars away easily, and this is what Izzy studies and writes about: alarm systems, home security, protection systems, and more.

Frank Dodds says
ADS Security is a decent alarm company but certainly not the best. You can count of them for having great customer service but the fail to provide in certain aspects as detailed in this review. You can find a better alarm system company, in my opinion.
Security & Cellular Plus says
Very well balanced enumeration of pros and cons. Thank you for this helpful article. High reputation and reliability really deserves double fee. In fact, high demand of their service is a clear indication of astounding credentials. Hence, it’s all worth it.
Jean says
ADS is definitely on the high-end price point range and it’s with good reason. They have highly-trained personnel and they use industry-leading equipment brand. Now, if they would just upgrade their systems, then they would be up there with Frontpoint and ADT. It’s too expensive for an outdated system. If they want more business, they should keep up with the changing technologies.
Kyle says
I suggest trying a different company. ADS is sketchy especially if you read their contract terms. It seems they want to bind you as their company for eternity with auto renew policies, long agreement terms with high cancellation fees. After looking into them and having a rep come to my house to give me a quote I didn’t feel comfortable signing with them and glad I didn’t!
Veronica says
After reading about ADS in detail, it seems a nice choice for home security system to me. The price is bit high but we are getting many other pros with ADS security. What do you guys suggest?
Alarm Reviews says
Hey Veroinca,
As always the choice is up to you and your home. We give a top 3 recommendation for individuals like yourself who are not quite sure who to choose. That along with this review should point you to a company that will fit your security needs.
Philip Saw says
ADS seems old and outdated to me. I think they need to revamp their advertising, logo and security equipment. Until then, I have left them and gone with the #1 company recommended here and you can easily tell the difference.
Ryder says
I experienced major problems with the installation process. Customer service provided conflicting information depending on whom I talked to. I came very close to canceling the contract because of the problems with installation. Some information was just plain not true.
Nathalia says
We really like ads. It’s easy to install. The only thing is I don’t know when my contract will end because I am not sure if I signed up for a two-year contract. I hope to have some feedback or more communication about where my account stands.
Sandie Whittaker says
I love the home control capabilities with the system I have installed. It’s a blast to turn the lamp off when my wife is studying and unlocking the door for visitors from my iPad while I sit on the couch. A bit pricey compared to the other companies listed here but it’s awesome!
Bruc k says
the Best Security company I have ever had.
hands down the best service in this town for
sure.
Alarm Reviews says
Quite the confidence Bruce! Glad you enjoy them, although they are not one of the 5 National companies we recommend they are a good company and have all around average experience in the security realm.
Rechel vinc says
One of the best decisions I’ve made since
becoming a homeowner was using ADS
Security. I had a lot of questions regarding
installation with new construction and my
representative made me feel so secure in my
decision. I was able to have the system
installed immediately before move in and with
perfect precision. I was given all options and
my respresentative helped me decide what was best for me, what I really needed and the most cost effective. Upon installing the alarm I was given a great explanation of how system works and felt confident in my choice once again. I live in a transitional neighborhood and I have zero worries over the safety of myself and my belongings due to ADS. I have accidentally set my alarm off multiple times and I can attest to the efficiency of this company and their patience with their customers. Having the ability to check on the status of my alarm or set it from my phone gives me complete peace
of mind. There is no better alarm company.
Ben says
Having the system in my home for a little over a year has been great. My son is able to use the Zwave door keypad lock to let himself into the home after school with no problems. We also have a dog and feel good about leaving her out of her crate during the day. When our older children visit, they can set their own
codes with ease. When we do accidently set off
the alarm, central station calls within seconds.
I feel sure that my family is safe and secure in
our home due to having this system in place.
These are just a few reasons, of many, why I
love my ADS system.
Randy Otten says
I’ve found that companies that have great customer service can make a big difference. Sometimes you have to pay more to get good service. I like that they use uses Honeywell equipment, which is top of the line in my opinion.
Eugenie says
That’s true! most of time it is the right thing to do, to get the best service available for your business or home, compromising due to the price might cost you more if anything go wrong with cheaper service!
Jim Winters says
I’ve been looking into having a home security system installed and ADT has a lot to offer. I agree that the main drawback is the cost of their systems, but I’ve talked to a few of their customers that think the quality of their service makes up for that.
Robin says
I have a 2gig system Installed by ADS Security. They have many different equipment choices to choose from.
