Guardian Protection Review 2026: 75-Year Provider With 5-Year Contracts & $70/Month Pricing — Is It Worth It?

Guardian Protection Services is the largest privately held home security company in the US — a Pittsburgh institution since 1950 with its own monitoring center. That sounds impressive. But in 2026, their 5-year contracts, $46-70/month pricing, and dealer-model problems make them one of the worst values in residential security. Here’s our honest, data-backed assessment.

Guardian Protection: Company Profile

DetailGuardian Protection

Guardian’s History & Acquisitions

Guardian has been absorbing smaller alarm companies for decades — a pattern that often leaves acquired customers locked into contracts they didn’t sign up for:

YearEventImpact
1950Founded in Pittsburgh as Guardian AlarmLocal alarm installation company
1970s-80sExpanded through regional acquisitionsBuilt dealer network across eastern US
1990sAdopted digital monitoring, expanded to ~15 statesBuilt own Five Diamond monitoring center
2010sSwitched to 2GIG panels + Alarm.com platformModernized equipment but kept dealer model
2018Acquired ASG Security accountsFormer ASG customers rolled into Guardian contracts
2020sExpanding commercial division (fire, access control)Commercial becoming larger revenue source than residential
2026Still privately held, still running dealer modelNo innovation in residential — same contracts, same pricing

Guardian’s Genuine Strengths

To be fair — Guardian has real advantages over some competitors. We’re not going to pretend they’re all bad:

StrengthDetailsWhy It Matters
Own monitoring centerCSAA Five Diamond certified, UL-listed, operated in PittsburghUnlike Brinks dealers who outsource to third parties — Guardian monitors your alarm themselves
75+ year track recordOperating since 1950 — one of the oldest security companiesNot a startup that might disappear (like Protect America did)
Strong commercial divisionFire monitoring, access control, video surveillance for businessesLegitimate commercial security — not just residential
Alarm.com platformIndustry-leading smart security app (4.7★ iOS, 4.5★ Android)Better app than most dealer-installed systems provide
Military & first responder discountsNot commonly offered by competitorsGenuine cost savings for qualifying customers
Local techniciansIn-house and authorized installer networkProfessional installation with warranty — good for complex setups

Guardian’s 8 Major Problems

#ProblemDetailsModern Alternative
160-month contractsMany dealers push 5-year agreements. At $46/mo minimum, that’s $2,760+ committed before you can leave.Abode: No contract — cancel anytime
2$46-70/month pricingGuardian’s cheapest residential plan costs more than most systems’ premium tiers.Abode: Free self-monitoring, $6-$20/mo pro
3Brutal early termination fees75-100% of remaining balance. Cancel 2 years into a 5-year contract? You owe $1,380-$1,680.Ring: $0 cancellation fee
4Auto-renewal clausesContracts auto-renew for 12-24 months if you miss the cancellation window (often 30-60 days before expiry).SimpliSafe: Month-to-month, cancel online
5Professional install onlyNo DIY option. $99-$199+ installation fee, scheduling required, can’t take equipment if you move. All DIY systems: Peel-and-stick, 15-30 min setup
6~20 state coverageIf you move outside their service area, you’re stuck paying for a contract you can’t use.DIY systems: Work anywhere with cellular/Wi-Fi
7Dealer quality varianceYour experience depends on which dealer you get — Guardian can’t control all of them.Direct-to-consumer systems: Consistent experience
8Proprietary equipment lock-in2GIG panels + Alarm.com require an Alarm.com dealer to monitor. Cancel Guardian? Your panel becomes expensive paperweight (unless you find another dealer).Abode/Ring: You own equipment, no dealer needed

Guardian’s Plans & Pricing (2026)

Guardian doesn’t publish transparent pricing online — you have to get a quote from a dealer. This opacity is itself a red flag. Based on customer reports and contract data:

Plan TierMonthlyContractKey FeaturesEquipment
Standard$45.99/mo36-60 months24/7 monitoring, cellular connection, Alarm.com app2GIG panel, door/window sensors, motion, keypad
Enhanced$54.99/mo36-60 months+ Video monitoring, smart home control+ Cameras, smart lock, thermostat
Premium$69.99/mo36-60 months+ Video analytics, Smart Signal verification+ More cameras, video doorbell

Hidden costs: Installation fee ($99-$199+), equipment upgrade charges, relocation fees if you move, and the early termination fee that can exceed $1,500.

3-Year Total Cost Comparison

This is where Guardian’s pricing model falls apart. Here’s what you’ll actually pay over 3 years compared to modern alternatives:

SystemEquipmentMonthly3-Year TotalContractMonitoring Quality
Guardian Standard$149 (install)$45.99$1,80536-60 mo ❌Own Five Diamond center ✅
Guardian Premium$199 (install)$69.99$2,71936-60 mo ❌Own Five Diamond center ✅
Abode (self-monitor)$279$0$279None ✅Self-monitoring (free)
Abode (Pro plan)$279$20$999None ✅Professional monitoring ✅
Ring (Plus)$199$20$919None ✅Professional monitoring ✅
SimpliSafe (Interactive)$299$27.99$1,307None ✅Fast Protect + video verification ✅
ADT Self Setup$199$24.99$1,099None ✅ADT monitoring + Nest cams ✅

Guardian costs $800-$1,800 more than comparable DIY systems over 3 years — and locks you into a contract while doing it. The only advantage is their own monitoring center, but Abode and Ring use equally certified professional monitoring stations.

Guardian’s Dealer Model: 7 Problems You Should Know

Like ADT, Brinks, and Monitronics, Guardian sells through authorized dealers. This creates systemic problems:

#Dealer ProblemHow It Affects You
1Commission-driven salesDealers earn upfront commissions — incentivized to sell you the longest contract possible
2Equipment markupYou pay $500-$1,500+ for equipment that costs $200-$400 wholesale
3Quality inconsistencyYour experience depends entirely on which dealer you happen to get
4Door-to-door pressureSome dealers use aggressive door-to-door sales tactics with same-day close pressure
5Contract confusionTerms sold verbally by dealer may differ from actual contract fine print
6Cancellation runaroundDealer sold you the contract but Guardian corporate handles cancellation — finger-pointing between them
7Account acquisitionGuardian acquires accounts from failed companies (like ASG) — those customers never chose Guardian

Who Should Actually Consider Guardian?

ScenarioGuardian?Why
Commercial security (business, warehouse, office)✅ YesGuardian’s commercial division is legitimate — fire monitoring, access control, video surveillance with professional design
Complex residential install (large home, pre-wired, multi-zone)⚠️ MaybeIf you need 20+ zones with hardwired sensors, professional installation has value — but get quotes from ADT Self Setup too
Military/first responder in their coverage area⚠️ MaybeDiscount may make pricing competitive — but do the math vs DIY first
Standard residential (3-4BR home, normal setup)❌ NoAbode Smart Security Kit covers this for $279 + $0-20/mo with better smart home integration
Renters❌ NoNo DIY option, can’t take equipment, contracts don’t fit renter timelines — see renter guide
People who might move❌ No~20 state coverage + pro install = nightmare for relocations
Budget-conscious buyers❌ No$1,800-$2,700+ over 3 years vs $279-$999 for Abode — not even close

How to Cancel Guardian Protection

If you’re currently stuck with Guardian and want out, here’s your playbook:

StepActionDetails
1Find your contract end dateCheck your original agreement or call Guardian at 1-800-776-1163
2Check the cancellation windowMost contracts require written notice 30-60 days before expiry — miss it and you auto-renew for 12-24 months
3Send certified mailWritten cancellation via certified mail (return receipt) to: Guardian Protection Services, 174 Thorn Hill Rd, Warrendale, PA 15086
4Document everythingKeep copies of all correspondence, note call dates/times/rep names
5If mid-contractNegotiate — sometimes you can settle for 50-60% of remaining balance rather than 100%. Military PCS orders or documented relocation may qualify for early release.
6Switch to DIYOrder your replacement system (Abode, Ring, SimpliSafe) before cancellation takes effect so you’re never unprotected

If You Were Acquired by Guardian (Former ASG/Other Customers)

Guardian has acquired customer accounts from companies like ASG Security. If you suddenly found yourself a Guardian customer without choosing them:

SituationYour RightsBest Action
Contract was transferredOriginal terms typically carry over — check for material changesRequest a copy of your current contract terms in writing
Pricing increasedMaterial change may give you cancellation rightsSend written objection within 30 days of rate increase notice
Service quality declinedDocument specific failures (missed alarms, slow response)File BBB complaint + state AG complaint — creates leverage for contract release
Contract expired/near expiryDon’t auto-renew — you have the leverageLet it lapse and switch to Abode (no contract, better value)

Our Verdict: 2.5/5

Guardian Protection has a solid reputation and owns their monitoring infrastructure — that genuinely counts for something. Their Five Diamond monitoring center, 75+ year track record, and strong commercial division are real strengths. The Alarm.com platform is excellent.

But their residential business model is a relic. Paying $46-70/month on a 3-5 year contract with $1,500+ early termination fees simply doesn’t make sense in 2026. Abode offers equivalent or better home protection at a fraction of the cost with no contract, better smart home integration (HomeKit + Alexa + Google), and equipment you actually own.

For commercial security in Guardian’s coverage area, they’re a legitimate option worth quoting. For residential, there’s no scenario where Guardian beats modern DIY on value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Guardian Protection cost per month?

Guardian’s residential plans range from $45.99 to $69.99 per month, plus a $99-$199+ installation fee. They require 36-60 month contracts. Compare this to Abode’s free self-monitoring or $20/mo professional monitoring with no contract.

Can I cancel Guardian Protection early?

Yes, but expect to pay 75-100% of your remaining contract balance as an early termination fee. A customer 2 years into a 5-year contract at $46/mo would owe $1,380-$1,656. Send cancellation via certified mail to their Warrendale, PA headquarters. See our full cancellation guide.

Is Guardian Protection better than ADT?

Guardian’s own monitoring center is an advantage over ADT’s outsourced model. But ADT now offers Self Setup (no contract, $5.99-$24.99/mo) which is far more flexible. Both are overpriced compared to Abode or Ring.

Does Guardian use Alarm.com?

Yes. Guardian uses 2GIG panels with the Alarm.com platform. The Alarm.com app is excellent (4.7★ iOS), but it means your equipment needs an Alarm.com-compatible dealer to monitor — you can’t self-monitor a Guardian panel without their service.

Can I keep my Guardian equipment if I cancel?

It depends on your contract. Some agreements stipulate equipment belongs to Guardian; others let you keep it. Even if you keep the 2GIG panel, you’ll need to find another Alarm.com dealer (like Alarm Grid or Alarm Relay) to monitor it — or switch to a DIY system entirely.

Where does Guardian Protection offer service?

Approximately 20 states, primarily in the eastern US: Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, and select other states. Coverage varies by dealer. DIY systems like Abode work anywhere in the US with no coverage limitations.

Absolutely the worst customer service of any company. They are attempting to charge us $1100 for cancelling service when we cant take it to the new house and are moving. They are calling it an equipment fee since the equipment is cheaper when you have the contract. This is absurd for us since we have been with them for 4 years. Just avoid them and head to Brinks or use the new nest system which is fantastic. They also never offered us a pay by month or anything other then what they are claiming is a 60 month contract they signed without our permission

Hi Jacob, I’m sorry to hear you’re so dissatisfied with your services after we have been helping to protect your home for 4 years. I have looked into your account and see we offered to reduce the early termination fee to $750. If we can ever help you in the future with your security needs please let us know.

      Hello,

We apologize for the frustration; we do have a relocation program but notes on the account indicate you were moving and would not provide the new address and you had already elected to go with another company. Guardian makes a large upfront investment when installing or upgrading a security system and your signed agreement helps us recoup those costs. If you do not fulfill the terms of your agreement there is an early termination fee. If we can help explain the agreement further please email us at wecare@gpsx.net.

      Sincerely,

I have been a cust-mer for over 8 years. Recently one of my motion sensors was erroneously causing the alarm to activate. I phoned Gaurdian and they set up a service appointment. The Tech arrived and puttered around my office for about an hour. He never discussed anything with me. Never talked to me about what was wrong, what he thought should be done, or a hint about the cost. He left without a discussion (I was sitting 20 feet away, with an open door). Yesterday I received a bill for $489. When I called to ask why the tech never provided me with an estimate, the rep immediately got nasty and said that ‘she had no mechanism to reduce the bill’ and
Transferred me to a supervisor’s voice mail. I feel that it would have been good for the tech to tell me what he wanted to do and provide me with a cost so that I could decide if I wanted to proceed. I would not be in business if I just showed up, proceeded with a repair without a discussion or an estimate and just send out a bill when done. I am seriously surprised by the lack of any communication or writing up an estimate for repairs.

I want to start off by saying DO NOT sign with a company like this if there is any chance you will be moving. The cancellation fees are horrendous. I was with Guardian for a few years and complications caused me to need to move and I was not able to bring their service with me so I had to pay out of pocket to cancel the contract. Was not a fun process.

It happened to me and my wife. We loved the company but I got transferred to another area and ended up having to use money out of our pockets to cover the cost of canceling. It was horrible what they charged us after being with them for 4 years.

I have never had an issue with this company and I have been with them for 3 years. I feel like a lot of these comments are focusing on the negatives of Guardian Security. No company is perfect and it isn’t the company’s fault if you don’t read the fine print. This was a good review and very fair in my opinion.

There is a difference though if you did and they still screw you over. This happened to me and my husband. I spent months trying to get things sorted out with my checking account. They kept taking money out as “payment” but I had the system uninstalled and removed form the home. It was a nightmare. They agree to terminate the contract because of a mistake on their end but they charged me for months after. My credit score has dropped so much as I was unable to pay it. Thankfully most everything else is in my husband’s name and this didn’t happen to his scores.

Hey Friends… So this is not my style.. but i feel it is only fair to warn people of what’s going on! @guardiansecurity has the most ridiculous policies I have ever heard! If you have signed a contract with them you have also signed that your contract will auto renew once you hit your term.

I sold my home in October 2016, I called Guardian to let them know it has been sold and that I will pay the remainder of my contract to keep the system up and running. My contract renewed in DECEMBER! The person on the other end of the line did not think this was important information for me to know. Therefore, it “auto renewed”. Now I am stuck paying $327.18 to buy out of the remainder of my contract.

After speaking to MULTIPLE people and being avoided for a week I finally had to settle with paying $100 even to get out of this contract and be able to “walk away”.

Here’s my problem. I am no longer a home owner… If i had moved to another home.. okay yes, you need to move your contract to that home blah blah blah… But they are making me hold true to a contract that is, in my opinion VOID because I have nowhere to have this service in which they provide! I am absolutely disgusted that I have to pay them ANY money at all but I am tired of fighting them!

Please just be warned!! Be sure to keep track of your contract date and the “Information you are responsible for” because there is NO negotiation or understanding from this company. Absolute and total crooks if you ask me!

This sounds horrible! I am sorry this happened to you. One of the main things I will ask up front is what would happen in the event I ever lost my home? Is there a clause to back out of the contract in this event? ect. ect. and if they can’t give me a straight answer and put it in writing I move on. I know a few people who love Guardian Security but in the even that you for some reason need to get out of your contract then things look very messy.

Guardian isn’t as bad as is been painted. Granted they have a long way to go but they do offer quality service for money. I have been with them for about 3 years of the regular 5 years contract and I feel they do deliver on their promise of securing my home.

I’m not sure I want to be tied down for 5 years in contract. That’s too long a period if their services are not up to par. And I’m not keen on paying 20% termination fee should their system don’t deliver as promised. I think there’s should be some form of flexibility in terms of pricing and contract length. More options can bring in more customers.

Yup I was able to get a shorter contract myself. I think it is worth looking into. May only be a local thing or something that depends on where you live. I feel like this is a much better option. 3 years is reasonable since most people live in one place for at least 3 years with no issues.

I worked for this fine company for a few years and I can honestly say that we never had a customer complaint so I am sorry to hear you had that happen to you. I personally find the company to be good to work for and I have only ever seen them respect the customers and get done what needs to be done. You should have reported it because someone maybe should not have been at work that day.

I searched for companies which offered some good features and Guardian was one of those at the top. I chose them over other security service providers because the device is wireless and because of the ease of installation – the fact that you can get to do it yourself. It’s easy and simple. Guardian team have all been good. Since installing the security device I feel safer and have fewer worries.

Great company, the rep was helpful but after reading the reviews here on your site I can’t help but feel I got cheated out of a good deal. I paid $199 installation with Guardian and didn’t even get top of the line equipment like ADT or Protection One. Live and learn I guess, at least I know who to switch too once I am out of this contract.

We had Guardian installed in our home a little over a year ago. My husband and I like knowing our family and our home are protected whether we’re home or not.
Guardian is really easy to use– even our daughter has no problem arming and
disarming it. We have the interactive features
which make it convenient when I forget to arm
the system on my way out or if we need to let
the neighbor in while we’re away. It also sends
us a text when our daughter gets home from
school and disarms. Customer Service and
Central Station have always been helpful and
pleasant. The installer was pleasant, neat and
made sure we understood everything before
he left. Overall, we’re very pleased with
    Guardian.

I have Guardian systems installed in 2 of my home rental units. Previously I only had ADT and still am in contract for 4 of those systems. After numerous charges from the police departments in the localities of my rental houses for falsely triggered alarms, I will be converting those units to Guardian. Their customer service is phenomenal and you can understand them (no broken English speaking operators). The only bad part about Guardian is most people aren’t going to be able to get it and it’s impractical if you move around whereas ADT is not.

They seem like a hit or miss company. They have good qualities but their range is something that is left to be not so desirable. I read into so many companies and this one just doesn’t stand out. I came to find out they weren’t in my area anyways. I think if they go nationwide they can compete with bigger companies. It isn’t always good to stay to one area.

It sounds like a okay home security system and all, but I think I’m better off going with something more popular and useful in this case. Doesn’t help that they’re only available in 20 out of the 50 states either. Therefore I think I’m going to pass on these guys.
