SimpliSafe vs Wyze 2026: Budget Alarm vs Ultra-Budget Cameras — Which DIY System Protects Your Home?

SimpliSafe and Wyze both target budget-conscious homeowners, but they’re fundamentally different products. SimpliSafe is a full alarm system with optional professional monitoring. Wyze started as a camera company and bolted on a basic alarm kit. Here’s how they actually compare in 2026.

Quick Comparison

Equipment & Sensors

SimpliSafe offers 15+ sensor types including glass break, water leak, freeze, smoke, and CO detectors. Their equipment ecosystem is mature and covers nearly every scenario.

Wyze Home Monitoring is limited to entry sensors, motion sensors, a keypad, and a hub. No glass break, no environmental sensors. If you need comprehensive coverage, SimpliSafe wins easily.

Camera Quality

Wyze dominates on camera value. The Wyze Cam v4 costs $35 and delivers excellent 2K video with color night vision. SimpliSafe’s cheapest indoor camera is $99.

However, Wyze has had serious security breaches — a 2022 incident exposed footage from 13,000 users. SimpliSafe has had its own vulnerabilities but generally handles security more seriously.

Monitoring Plans

PlanSimpliSafeWyze
Self-MonitorFree (app alerts only)Free (app alerts only)
Basic Monitoring$19.99/mo (no cameras)$5.99/mo (HMS only)
Full Monitoring$29.99/mo (cameras + monitoring)$9.99/mo (cameras + HMS)

3-Year Cost Comparison

ScenarioSimpliSafeWyzeAbode
Equipment (5-sensor kit + 2 cameras)$527$218$379
3 years monitoring$1,080$360$0 (free tier)
3-Year Total$1,607$578$379

Wyze is cheaper than SimpliSafe, but Abode’s free self-monitoring tier makes it the best value if you don’t need 24/7 professional dispatch.

Privacy & Security

Both have had security issues, but Wyze’s track record is worse. The 2022 breach, plus delayed disclosure of a 2017 vulnerability, raise serious questions about their security practices for a company selling security products.

SimpliSafe uses encrypted connections and has improved significantly since early vulnerabilities were exposed. Neither offers local storage on the alarm side.

Verdict: Who Should Buy Which?

  • Choose SimpliSafe if: You want a proven alarm system with comprehensive sensors and don’t mind paying $30/mo for monitoring
  • Choose Wyze if: Budget is #1 priority, you mainly want cameras, and you accept the privacy trade-offs
  • Choose Abode if: You want the best of both — real alarm system, free monitoring, HomeKit support, and no subscription required

FAQs

Is Wyze as reliable as SimpliSafe for home security?

No. SimpliSafe has a dedicated alarm infrastructure with cellular backup and battery backup. Wyze HMS relies on Wi-Fi only with no cellular failover, making it less reliable during outages.

Can I use Wyze cameras with SimpliSafe?

Not directly. They’re separate ecosystems. You could run both apps independently, but there’s no integration between them.

Which has better customer support?

SimpliSafe offers phone, chat, and email support with US-based agents. Wyze support is more limited and frequently criticized in reviews. For a security product, SimpliSafe’s support advantage matters.

What about Abode as an alternative?

Abode offers a full alarm system like SimpliSafe but with free self-monitoring (no monthly fee), HomeKit compatibility, and competitive equipment pricing. It’s the middle ground between SimpliSafe’s comprehensiveness and Wyze’s affordability. See our SimpliSafe review and best systems ranking for more comparisons.
